There's a young woman having a complicated, intensely personal, and quite loud telephone conversation in the public area just down from my office. She's in for the long haul, having pulled the chair around to face the loveseat, so she can put her feet up and be comfy.

Meanwhile, immediately below my office window, a grounds crew is standing around, apparently judging whether the sound of the gentleman reading from a book reaches far enough out into the damp, peaceful world. The window is closed, so I can hear the cadence of his voice, but not the words he's reading. Ah! The sound guy just increased the gain. Now I can hear the words. Not a book I know. And not a gentleman who is completely at ease, reading aloud all by himself at the top of the library steps.

One of my faculty helpfully stopped by to tell me that Chinese astronauts orbited the earth last Friday. I agreed that I had seen mention of this in the news, whereupon he kindly offered the suggestion that I might write a "fiction thing" about the event.

Is it lunch time, yet?

I might write a "fiction thing" about the event.

During work hours?

Or in your spare time at home?

And where did you bury his body?

Did you get any help from the grounds crew?

Because much of the work writers do is off stage some people think there's really no effort involved.

Lots of artistic types get that attitude a lot. So do stay at home parents. I'm sure there are others.

And where did you bury his body?

He really was trying to be kind. Clueless. But kind.

BTW I thought it was a pity you couldn't find a way to move the phone lady and the step speaker into each others personal space. That way they could have annoyed each other instead of you.
