I thought that was what in media res meant? Start with confusion and bafflement (okay, action, lights, flashes and mysterious booms, cats walking through walls, things to get the reader reading!), then slowly let them in on what's going on?

A good hearty argument does provide a way to settle the reader into the situ with a bit of informative dialogue.
