One more and -- good-night

About an hour ago, Hexapuma realized that Steve was Not! Anywhere! To! Be! Found! He galloped through the house, squeaking in distress (yes, squeaking), then sat down in the hallway and bawled. He let me pick him up and stroke him, even purred briefly, but then it was down and on the trail again, calling, calling. . .

I think he's worn himself out now, poor little guy. In the past when one of our cats Suddenly Realized someone was absent, the one who was present was able to call the one who was not and put them on the phone with the cat. However, this method only works with a non-deaf cat.

Steve called in from Pennsylvania, having arrived in a timely fashion. His plan was to review workshop submissions and early to bed, so's to get a jump on tomorrow's section of travel.

My plan for tomorrow is early errands, then more writing. Supposed to rain, of course; but that's the story for the whole rest of the week, so I might as well get damp early and have it over with.

G'night.

Does that work? I would have thought that it would freak them out *more* to hear their Missing Person, but not be able to find them?

Does that work?

We've had success with it.

When Steve and I were moving to Maine, he was driving the rental truck, with Arwen as his co-pilot, and I was following in Bandit the Beretta, with Brandee in the cat carrier in the back and Archie riding shotgun.

We pulled over at a rest stop, had a sandwich, stretched our legs; Steve visited with "my" cats, I paid my respects to Arwen (like she cared), then we got back in our respective vehicles. Steve pulled out, I followed; Archie looked around and -- went nuts!

Good Ghod, Woman, what are you thinking? Pull over! Pull over NOW! WE LEFT STEVE OUT THERE!

At that point, I hit the CB, got Steve on, explained the problem. He called Archie's name, told him everything was cool, chatted about the Orioles (Archie was a big Birds fan), and -- Archie calmed down. He considered the radio, nuzzled it, purred, curled up on the passenger's seat and relaxed, slit-eyed.

The apparent thought process was that everything was OK, because Steve was Inside The Thing. As Steve was well-known among cat-kind for pulling off Strange Maneuvers, this was accepted as Just Like Him, and Comforting, and I heard no more about it.

Inside The Thing

For some reason this made me laugh uncontrollably.

My cat gets sad when Hubby calls. I don't suppose Hex would accept one of Steve's recently worn shirts to sleep on? Scent is important.

So sorry for little Hexapuma. I wonder if Steve spoke loud enough into the phone and you held the receiver against the back of his ear if he could feel some vibration. Well, it's an idea.

Hope the convention goes well.

When Dave Freer's (http://flindersfreer.blogspot.com/) animals were stuck in quarantine for *seven months* during their emigration to Australia, the English sheepdog went off his feed and lost several pounds. In desperation, Dave mailed to the kennel a "smell-o-gram" of an unwashed T-shirt. Roly perked right up and started eating.

On the infrequent occasions that I have to board my dog, I sleep in one of my hubby's older T-shirts for a few nights and then put it in a zip-loc bag. It goes to the kennel along with his food, treats, and other neccessities.

Poor little guy. I, too, recommend the unwashed t-shirt. And now I wish to snuggle my cats.

What about Skype and seeing Steve on screen? Would that help poor Hex?
