The email issue might be some sort of port filtering shenanigans; I've seen issues where hotel networks intercept connections to port 25 and therefore break outbound email (this is usually done as an attempt to not break email, but if it's done badly...).
If your email provider allows you to send mail via the "submission" port (587), you might have luck changing your mail program to use that for outbound email.
