Just in time for holiday gift giving!

The entire Baen ebook backlist is now in the Kindle store on Amazon.  This includes all of the Liaden Universe® novels, through Dragon Ship; the Fey Duology; and Carousel Tides, as well as fine novels by Lois McMaster Bujold, Dave Freer, Spider Robinson, Ryk Spoor, Jerry Pournelle, David Weber and all the rest of
our Baen colleagues. For Kindle users who indulge, that one click should be live now ...

Those who have been used to buying their ebooks directly from Baen may continue to do so since the arrangement with Amazon is in addition to the Baen direct sales. Of course, *all* Baen ebooks continue to be DRM-free.

Ms. Weisskopf at Baen has said that the company continues to work with other ebook distributors, in addition to Amazon.  Those who have ereaders other than Kindles may, as always, download ebooks directly from baenebooks.com in the platform of their choice.

PLEASE NOTE:
This Infodumpling comes to you hot on the heels of Baen's massive upload to Amazon, and the databases are still being brought into alignment.  This means that you may have to search on the specific title that you want to find in the Kindle Store.  But we promise you, all of our books are there.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of our work, and to wish you
the very best of holiday seasons, and a most excellent new year.

Sharon and Steve

CUSTOMER SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: DRAGON SHIP
Several readers have reported that, after being strung along for weeks, their orders for signed editions of Dragon Ship have been cancelled.

If your order was one of those cancelled, we apologize for the frustration and disappointment this has very likely caused. Should you still wish a signed copy, Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore in Minneapolis has signed copies in stock. They do mail order, worldwide. You may order from this page (you will have to scroll down)

NECESSITY'S CHILD NEWS
The electronic advance reading copy of Liaden Universe® novel Necessity's Child (the book formerly known as George) is now available for download here.

Earcs are unedited editions; they will contain errors. To answer a frequently asked question: Yes, Lee and Miller receive royalties on eArc sales.

Not sure you want to go for the eArc? Baen has also provided the first nine chapters, which may be read for free, starting here.

For those who prefer paper books, Necessity's Child will be published in hardcover in February 2013. Signed editions will be available from the bookstore of your choice. Uncle Hugo's is accepting pre-orders here.

Also expected in February, the audiobook edition of Necessity's Child, from Audible.com

AND! In January, look for a new short story on the Baen website, free to read!

DEADLINES, WE HAVE THEM
Herewith, the Lee and Miller (and Lee) delivery dates for the next while.

Trade Secrets (Liaden). . . . . . January 9, 2013

Carousel Seas (Archers Beach). . . . . . August 15, 2013

Fourth of Five (Liaden). . . . . . August 15, 2016
Fifth of Five (Liaden). . . . . . May 15, 2017

For clarity, a small review of terms:

"Delivery date" means the date on which a particular manuscript is due to arrive on the editor's desk.

"Publication date" is the date on which a book is scheduled to be published.

These two things are not the same. Publishers (wisely) tend not to set publication dates in stone until the manuscript has been delivered. A good rule of thumb is to figure that a particular title will be published nine months to a year after delivery.

Five at one blow

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are pleased to announce that they they have, through the offices of their agent, Jennifer Jackson of the Maass Agency, sold *five* Liaden Universe® novels to Toni Weisskopf, at Baen.  These five books will finish out the combined Theo Waitley/Agent of Change storylines.  Delivery dates (NOT publication dates) are from mid-2013 through mid-2016; titles are not yet known.

Regarding Signed Copies of Dragon Ship

There was error at the bindery which resulted in some signed sheets being bound into the wrong edition (by which we mean wrong-ISBN, since the signed and unsigned editions bear two distinct ISBNs) of Dragon Ship.  This has, as you may well imagine, Caused Some Problems.  The quickest to recover is Don Blyly, who, now in receipt of Simon and Schuster's fix, is, after a hiatus of a day or two, continuing to ship pre-ordered books.  He lets us know that he has another 100/150 unspoken for signed editions, so if Amazon has given you a November ship date, or has cancelled your order --  contact Uncle Hugo

Regarding Signed Copies of Necessity's Child, the Book Formerly Known as George

Uncle Hugo's is now accepting pre-orders, here:

In light of the snafu with the Dragon Ship signed copies and the rapid professionalism with which Uncle Hugo's dealt with the situation (in direct opposition to Amazon's continuing lack of customer service), we strongly recommend that you consider pre-ordering a signed copy of Necessity's Child from Uncle.

Liaden Audiobook Reminder

Fifteen Liaden novels (aka all of them), divided into four Sequences are now available from Audible.com.  For those who may wish to sample the material, or the narrator, or both, before purchase, Audible has generously provided a free hour sample of the first book in each of the four Sequences.  Handy links:  right here

Also, Steve and Sharon interviewed the narrators.  Those interviews are posted here,  and are another way to get to know the narrators.

P.S.  We have heard from Mr. Feldberg at Audible that he does intend to acquire audiobook rights to Necessity's Child, publication date February 2013.

QR Codes to Use and Share

In lieu of a series of flyers, each aimed at a single particular book or series of releases we've created ashort term all purpose flyer  you can print out and take with you -- or point to on the web -- when you want to share information about current Liaden interest and Lee & Miller material. We've used the QR-codes an well as URLs in the flyer since so many people carry their phones at all times and can just "point and shoot"  from the flyer or even from your computer screen and from some tablets and phones as well. Ebooks, audiobooks, splinters .. all should be covered on on flyer.  If the QR code approach is popular we'll work them into single flyers down the road.

New Splinter

There's a new splinter/story bearing on the Archers Beach universe at Splinter Universe!  If you like the story, or the site, please consider hitting the Paypal button at the bottom of the page.

Publication Schedule

Necessity's Child (the book formerly known as George), February 2013

 Watch the Skies

The eARC for Necessity's Child will be available for download in the format of your choice from Baen Ebooks  "sometime around late October -- mid-November."
eArcs are "electronic advance reading copies."   They are basically unedited, and as such will certainly contain errors of grammar and spelling, with the occasional continuity error.  They are offered by Baen, at a premium, price, for those readers who must know what happens next, NOW.

Where in the World are Lee and Miller?

Boskone, February 15-17, 2013, Boston (http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/)

At this point, Steve and Sharon have no plans to attend either WorldCon nor DragonCon in 2013.

Dragon Ship's Official Book Day -- aka, the day that the hardcover novel is Officially Released -- is ALSO September 4. Are you guys gonna be busy or what?

Going One Month Back in Time. . .
The mass market of Ghost Ship is now available at a bookstore near you.

Aaaaand, Back to the Present
Two new eChapbooks, both writing-related, have gone up on Pinbeam books.

The first, "Reflections on Tinsori Light," includes a foreword by Sharon Lee, the complete short story, "The Space at Tinsori Light," and! the outline from which the story was built.

The second new book, "Writing Neep: Short Essays on the Writing Life," by Sharon Lee, includes 15 essays collected from the author's blog from 2006 through 2012.

Now, a Nature Note: Water is Wet
As some of you know, Sharon and Steve entertained a flood in their house on August 3; a feed line in the bathroom burst, filling the bathroom and the basement with plenty too much water.

What we want to say about that is? We're fine. Yes, we were bummed that our plan to put all the good stuff on pallets overlooked the fact that water falls DOWN, too, but we got over that. We have homeowner's insurance; it covers the cost of drying out everything that can be dried out. Yes, we have a deductible; yes, we lost some stuff; yes, sorting through is exhausting, but mostly what it is at this point? Is a headache. We really didn't need this right now -- We're sure all of you know what we're talking about, here. We're doing the stuff that you do in the aftermath of your house flooding -- coping with the adjustor, the flooring guy, and the plumber, and, hey, while we're at it, the painter and the carpenter. It's a mess, but -- again, and truly: We're fine.

Nobody needs to send us books, or big chunks of money, or computers, or -- anything, really. It's sweet that you care. If you feel you want to help in some way, well...the cats took some tragic losses -- several favorite scratching posts were unrecoverable, as were some highly regarded blankets and cushions, and an extremely well-loved catnip mouse, and some cat-place towels, too. If you want to assist with things like that, OK, we appreciate the offers, and since the insurance payout will take a few days to make it through channels, we'll accept small donations to srmATkorvalDOTcom -- please no more than $10 or $12 per individual! We'll make sure the cats are outfitted well, and we will tell them the name of their benefactor! Don't expect a thank you note from them; they're cats. Any overflow will go to the Waterville Homeless Shelter, which is our charity-of-choice.

Thank you all for your concern and care!

Audible to release entire Liaden series
Audible.com will be releasing all 15 Liaden Universe® novels — Agent of Change through Dragon Ship! — in audiobook format.  It is the stated intention of Mr. Feldberg at Audible to have all 15 books available in time for the September hardcover release of Dragon Ship.

Publishing News
Baen has contracted for two sequels to Sharon Lee’s 2010 contemporary fantasy, Carousel Tides.  The novels, Carousel Sun and Carousel Seas, are due in early and mid 2013.  News of publishing dates when they become available.

Baen has also contracted to publish two collections of Liaden Universe® stories — specifically every story that appeared in the SRM Publisher, Ltd. Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbooks, that appeared from 1995 through 2011.  No publication date has been set.

Upcoming publications include Dragon Ship, which will of course be published in hardcover in September, Necessity’s Child (the book formerly known as George), to be published in May 2013.  A Liaden short story will also be the featured fiction on the Baen website in July.  That story will be available for free.

Ghost Ship Number One!
Ghost Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller placed Number One in the SFSite Readers Choice Awards for Best Books of 2011.  There’s a lot of great reading (and stiff competition) on this list, so take a look:  http://www.sfsite.com/columns/best12b.htm

Interviews and podcasts
On Thursday June 14 at 10 a.m. EDT, Sharon and Steve will be guests on Writers Forum on WERU-FM.  In addition to chatting a little about science fiction with our hostess, Ellie O’Leary, Sharon and Steve will be reading from Carousel Tides and from Fledgling. Writers Forum airs every second Thursday at 10 a.m. at 89.9 Blue Hill and 99.9 Bangor. It also streams live at www.weru.org.

Steve and Sharon were interviewed by Brent Bowen at ConQuesT.  The fruits of that interview will be posted to Adventures in Scifi Publishing (http://www.adventuresinscifipublishing.com/) within the next week or two.

Pre-ConQuesT, Bryan Thomas Schmidt conducted an in-depth email interview with Sharon and Steve.  You can read that interview at Grasping for the Wind (http://www.graspingforthewind.com/2012/04/26/sffwrtcht-a-chat-with-authors-sharon-lee-steve-miller)

Clarion Write-a-Thon
As he did last year, Steve is taking part in the Clarion West Write-a-thon, and plans to help raise $1000 this year. Steve’s goal for the Write-A-Thon is to finish the upcoming Jethri novel, Trade Secrets. Clarion West is one of the oldest major workshops for science fiction and fantasy writers and proceeds are used for scholarships. Those wishing to donate to support Clarion West through Team Miller can take a look here: http://clarionwest.org/writeathon/stevemiller … donate a buck or two to the cause to let him know you’re watching for Jethri.

Carousel Tides t-shirts
To celebrate the sale of two sequels to Carousel Tides, and to do a little stealth promotion, Sharon is for a limited time only (which means, through June 30) offering Carousel Tides t-shirts.  Sizes go up to 5XL; cost per shirt is $19, shipping in US and Canada is $5 (international shipping to be figured on a case-by-case basis).  Everything else you need to know can be found here:  http://sharonleewriter.com/2012/06/carousel-tides-t-shirt-2/

Signed Copies of Dragon Ship
Those interested in scoring a signed copy of the upcoming Dragon Ship hardcover and supporting a worthy independent bookstore may order from Uncle Hugo’s SF Bookstore.  Here’s a link to the Rules that Govern Preordering (good stuff that’s well worth reading here, like “your credit card will NOT be charged until your order is fulfilled and your book is on its way to you”):  http://sharonleewriter.com/2012/02/pre-order-autographed-dragon-ship/

And here is the link to Preorder NOW:  http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/ah-lee-miller.php

The Liaden Universe® World Tour
With their return from ConQuesT, Steve and Sharon have completed their convention traveling for 2012.  Next on the convention schedule is Boskone 50, February 15-17, 2013 (see you there?  http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/)

The above means that Sharon and Steve will not be attending Chicon 7, the 70th World Science Fiction convention, to be held in Chicago August 30-September 3 (http://www.chicon.org/).  Attending Friends of Liad are encouraged to gather together and lift a glass of your beverage of choice to the Dragon, and the Tree.  If anyone is planning to host a Liaden Lounge, please get in touch with Sharon (rolanniATkorvalDOTcom), there are ribbons and other goodies that can be shipped.

Liaden Universe® InfoDump #94

Just returned from being Guests of Honor at the delightful ChattaCon 37, Lee & Miller are still going places and doing things in 2012, with their next road trip coming real soon now, a few more in the spring, and another in early summer.

Publishing news:
Dragon Ship was turned in to Baen Books just before Lee & Miller left for Chattacon. Still set for September release in hardcover, watch for details, including a special signed edition.

Carousel Tides – Sharon’s ocean side urban fantasy — is now in mass market from Baen, wherever fine books are sold.

Legacy Systems, Adventures in the Liaden Universe® #19 was just published by Pinbeambooks.com as an ebook for Nook and Kindle. It’s available at Barnes & Noble and at Amazon, and will soon be at Smashwords in other formats.
Details: “Intelligent Design” – When a spaceship’s inquisitive cabin boy finds a surplus crate of spare parts at a warehouse, all he knows is that he wants it very much. His older cousin’s willing to see him buy it, but not quite so understanding when it comes time to connect the dots.
“The Space at Tinsori Light” – Sometimes in chaotic moments the panic button is all that’s left. Sometimes it saves you, and sometimes it takes you to the Space at Tinsori Light.

In other Pinbeam Books news, all February proceeds from the sale of the Cat’s Job ebook will be donated to Planned Parenthood’s breast cancer screening program – see see details at: http://www.pinbeambooks.com/

On the Internetz:
The annual SF Site Readers Choice Awards nomination period is open! until March 9. Nominate the best books of 2011 (And remember, Ghost Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller was published in August, 2011). Details are at http://www.sfsite.com/columns/neil360.htm ….

Travel News:
February 16, 2012 – Sharon and Steve will be signing at Pandemonium Books & Games 4 Pleasant St. Cambridge, MA 02139 , 7 to 9 PM – our first time is this location.

February 17-19, 2012 – Sharon and Steve will be appearing at the classic Boston regional SF convention, Boskone, Westin Boston Waterfront. The prime hotel is sold out but you can see where there are rooms locally by visiting the Boskone website – http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/ Preliminary scheduling shows that we will be hosting a Friends of Liad breakfast on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Saucity, which is in the hotel. We’re assuming that they will still be offering the Saturday morning buffet breakfast with your choice of made-on-the-spot omelets.  We hope to see lots of early risers. Do remember, the FoL breakfast is an informal gathering of friends; we are each responsible for paying our own check. We have a reading scheduled for 10 a.m., Sharon and then Steve is the official plan, but we may well switch off. We are also at the moment scheduled for a Literary Beer on Saturday at 4 p.m.  Sign-up at the con. Also on Saturday, we’ll be talking Liaden Universe® and Matters Astronomical with Brother Guy Consolmagno at 1 p.m.

Stop the presses! The almost-final Boskone schedule is now live here: http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/schedule.html

March 16, 2012 – Lee & Miller visit the the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, Maine to discuss writing (and reading) science fiction. This event is open to the public. 12:30 p.m.

April 5, 2012 – Rockland Public Library, 80 Union Street, Rockland, ME 04841 6:30 PM. Lee & Miller do a reading, talk, and signing at one of the fine coastal libraries.

Memorial Day Weekend — May 25-27, 2012 ConQuest 43, Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center, Kansas City, MO. We’d like to have the usual – a Friends of Laid breakfast and perhaps a friends of Liad party as well – will you be there?

WorldCon 2012 – yes, Lee & Miller are members of the Chicago Worldcon this summer. No, as things now stand, we will not be attending. This doesn’t mean Friends of Liad shouldn’t get together, but the chance of the authors stopping by is pretty low at the moment.

Miscellanea:
SRM Publisher’s leftover refrigerator, bookcases, and assorted boxes have huddled in the basement since the move out of Steve’s in town office last year as a bunch of piles. Those piles have given up a box marked “Sept – December files” that actually had some books in it… which will go to auction in the coming week or so on EBAY. Among them 2 First Edition Partners in Necessity hardcovers. 2 First Edition hardcover Liaden Universe Companion Vol , 1 of the Mass Market sized Liaden Universe Companion Vol 1. Watch Steve’s Twitter (*: http://twitter.com/bechimo ), Facebook, and blog for start dates for these sales.

Where on Earth are Lee and Miller?

Dear Friends and Readers,

Thank you all for receiving this extra long 93rd edition of the Liaden Universe® InfoDump, and special thanks to the hundred or so of you who have been with the InfoDump from Number One. Who knew when we started this little electronic newsletter well over a dozen years ago that it would still be going strong here in the second decade of the 21st century?

We’d like to take a moment more of your time, if we may, to reflect on 2011, which has been a very active year for us (and continues active, as we work to finish Dragon Ship, which is due RSN at Baen Intergalactic Headquarters in North Carolina). It been a very expensive year, and a very rewarding year; a year of decision.

Historically — in fact, since 1995 — we’d be busy at this time of year with SRM Publisher chapbooks, either sorting pre-orders or packing books. This year — this year of decision — there is no Yule chapbook to send out. We’re sorry for that. The Yule chapbook was a connection between us and you, our readers. Like sending cards to family. Yes, the mailing was a big project at a particularly busy time of year, but we miss it, and we hope you’re all well. . .as well as can be, in these uncertain times.

The decision to close down SRM Publisher wasn’t an easy one, but it was necessary. We need to concentrate on writing, and on staying healthy.

Part of the expense of this year, this 2011, was paid from Steve’s health. He was out of circulation for a number of months, with pneumonia, cardiac issues, an ICD implant…followed by rehab, and the fun game of Getting to Know Your Meds. Among it all, we lost Hexapuma, whose exploits many of you followed through Sharon’s blog, to kidney failure — and the year hasn’t exactly been easy on anybody, in terms of friends and colleagues lost.

Despite all that, Skyblaze, the 17th Adventure in the Liaden Universe(R) was written and mailed, we started a new online project in Splinter Universe, put many of our works into ebook format, did a TV interview. . .and traveled to Reno for WorldCon, where we saw so many of you! Dozens of you at once, in fact, at the wonderful Friends of Liad breakfast, which had more attendees then the first WorldCon. On the way home, we swung by Uncle Hugo’s in Minneapolis, where we signed and personalized hundreds of copies of Ghost Ship; met and talked to quite a few more of you. We were also Guests of Honor at a couple of regional conventions, where we talked to even more of you.

By that measure, then — the measure of connecting with our readers, making reasonable decisions for future health, and pursuing our long-term goal of living the writing life — 2011 has been a good year.

Thank you for helping make it so, for us. And we hope that we have, insofar as telling stories can, made your year more worthwhile, too.

A blessed Yule, a Merry Christmas, and a better New Year, to us all!

Steve and Sharon

Liaden Universe® InfoDump Number 93: The Gift Giving Edition

The rest is behind the cut )

rolanni: (greeneyes)

Dear Friends of Liad and all the ships at sea.

Following Saltation’s lead, Ghost Ship has sold out its hardcover run from the Simon and Schuster warehouse.  This is very, very cool — but it’s not why we’re writing to you.

No, we’re writing to let you know that, because of the sell-out, the Ghost Ships that are now in stores (and in the warehouses of the superstores) — are all that’s left.

In other words, if you were thinking about giving the gift of Ghost Ship for Christmas, you might want to be buying that now.

Mr. Blyly tells us that Uncle Hugo’s has about 70 SIGNED copies of Ghost Ship in hand.

Ms. Nagle at Constellation Books in Reisterstown, Maryland says she has two UNsigned copies of Ghost Ship on the shelf.

Ms. Richmond at Children’s Book Cellar in our very own Waterville, Maine (kidsbookcellarATmyfairpointDOTnet or 207.872.4543 has several copies of Ghost Ship in the store.  Children’s Book Cellar is our “home” store, and we can arrange to stop by and sign books there.

Ms. Hart at Mysterious Galaxy has seven UNsigned copies of Ghost Ship between the San Diego and the Redondo Beach stores.

All of the above bookstores do mail/email orders.

The mass market edition of Ghost Ship is scheduled for August 2012 release, with Dragon Ship scheduled to appear in September.

And!  Don’t forget that electronic editions of all Lee and Miller novels (except Sword of Orion) may be purchased from the Baen Books website

Change of Address
Effective, err, right now the new address for all things Lee and Miller (including SRM Publisher, Splinter Universe, and the inevitable etcetera) is:

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
P.O. Box 1586
Waterville ME  04903-1586

REMINDER:  SRM Publisher Closing
As reported in the previous InfoDump, SRM Publisher is in the process of shutting down.  The retail webpage is no longer accepting orders, and we are working to liquidate the remaining stock with an eye to having the business closed by the end of this year.

Those looking for chapbooks may query Mr. Blyly at Uncle Hugo’s SF Bookstore or Ms. LeBlanc at The Missing Volume.

We are in the process of transferring much of SRM’s stock to another vendor.  When that process is complete, we will provide details.

Back in print:  The Jen Pierce Maine Mysteries
Sharon has made Barnburner and Gunshy, long out of print, available once again in trade paperback, through Lulu.  The books may be ordered from this page.

For those interested in electronic editions of these same novels, they remain on offer at Fictionwise, here.

Coming Up from Lee and Miller
Remember that the mass market edition of Liaden Universe® novel Mouse and Dragon will be released on October 25 (that’s Tuesday!).  Mouse and Dragon is the sequel to Scout’s Progress, continuing the story of Aelliana Caylon and Daav yos’Phelium.

In case you missed it, the hardcover edition is still available from the Bookseller of Your Choice, and, as always, the electronic edition is available right now! in your favorite format (including Nook, Kindle, and a host of others) from Baen Books.

Also!  The mass market edition of Sharon’s contemporary Maine fantasy Carousel Tides is scheduled for January, 2012.  Or, if you can’t wait, the trade paperback edition is available from Your Favorite Bookseller, and, yep, the electronic edition is available for instant gratification, from Baen Books.

Miss Out on Ghost Ship Signed Copies?
Mr. Blyly has on hand a very few signed copies of the hardcover Ghost Ship.

Distant Early Warning:  Don Blyly intends to work with Baen on a similar project once Dragon Ship’s schedule is finalized — please wait to contact him about Dragon Ship.

Splinter Universe
Content has been added to Splinter Universe, notably four splinters dealing with When Val Con Met Nelirikk.

Watch for brand-new Liaden Universe® story, “The Space at Tinsori Light” before the end of the year.

The 2012 Jim Baen Annual Writing Contest Now Accepting Submissions!
First prize includes professional publication on the Baen website, for which the author will be paid pro rates. Judges are: Baen editors Hank Davis and Jim Minz, and authors Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Full details here

Splinter Universe
Sharon Lee and Steve Miller’s Splinter Universe is up, running and off to an exciting start. Presently available for free reading are Liaden Universe® stories “Kin Ties,” and “Guaranteed Delivery,” as well as Ghost Ship outtake “Daav wakes up early,” and the first 20,000 words of a novel that was never completed, The Cards of Fortunate Destiny.

Splinter Universe is a new short story feature site from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Stories will be posted on an irregular basis, along with teases, character sketches, and perhaps the occasional cartoon. Some, even most, of the stories will be based in Sharon and Steve’s Liaden Universe®. However, the authors reserve the right to post stories set elsewhere, and to introduce new characters and situations.

Every story and splinter may be read for free from the time it is posted until the time it ages off the website, but donations are encouraged.

SRM Publisher Closing
SRM Publisher came into being sort-of accidentally, in 1995, with the publication of Two Tales of Korval, Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number One. This 64-page saddle-stitched chapbook, with cover art by Jean Ann Pollard, included two stories — “To Cut an Edge,” and “A Day at the Races” — each of which had previously been sold to magazines that then folded before the stories saw print.

Steve produced TTOK in order to satisfy fan demand for “more Liaden stories” during the Great Dry Spell — after the novels had been dropped by Del Rey and before Meisha Merlin picked up the backlist and subsequent new novels in the series.

This past February, SRM published Skyblaze, the seventeenth Adventure in the Liaden Universe®.

In addition to publishing what became known as The Yule Chapbook for Liaden Universe® readers and fans, SRM published and promoted SF and fantasy chapbooks by writers such as Thomas A. Easton, Ru Emerson, James A. Hetley, Lawrence M. Schoen, Mark W. Tiedemann and non-fiction by David Harris and Bud Webster.

It is with a great deal of regret that we have taken the decision to close SRM Publisher. The retail webpage is no longer accepting orders, and we are working to liquidate the remaining stock with an eye to having the business closed by the end of this year.

We want to thank everyone for their support of and interest in SRM Publisher’s doings over the last sixteen years.

–Steve Miller and Sharon Lee

Where in the world are Lee and Miller?
Steve and Sharon are just back from the Reno Worldcon, where a Blast Was Officially Had, and The Great New England Steampunk Exhibition. A lot of people made a point to say Hi and let us know that they’re Liaden Universe® fans. We really appreciate it!

Our next outing is January 20-22, when we’ll be Guests of Honor, with Laura Anne Gilman, Rachel Caine, and Joe Picacio at Chattacon 36. Toastmaster is Mark van Name. Come help us celebrate Theo’s birthday!

Liaden Universe® InfoDump No. 90
To WorldCon we shall go…

Free Reading! Coupon Offer
1. “Intelligent Design” will be retired from the Baen front page on Monday, August 15, to make way for a brand! new! story! Once it is retired, “Intelligent Design” will be added to the free eBook compilation of front page stories, which can be downloaded here.

2. “Kin Ties” will be available for free reading at Splinter Universe on August 12 (that’s Friday!). To help people who may not have read its elder brother, “Changeling,” we (that’s Steve and Sharon, acting as Pinbeam Books) are offering a more-or-less half-off coupon for the eBook. This coupon is Smashwords-specific. All you need do is go here, choose your preferred format and use coupon code KB93Q (not case sensitive) at checkout. The coupon will expire on August 12 (yep, that’s still Friday).

Bestseller Lists!
1. A friendly bookseller lets us know that Ghost Ship has hit the Bookscan Bestselling SF List for the week of August 1. Which isn’t too bad for a book with a pub date of August 2.

2. Speaking of Ghost Ship — there’s a nice review at SFRevu

3. Also! The editors at Amazon.com (why does a bookstore have editors? No, on second thought, I don’t want to know) have chosen Ghost Ship for inclusion in their Fall Reading Preview   (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=br_lf_m_1000535991_grlink_6?ie=UTF8&plgroup=6&docId=1000535991)

4. Even cooler, Uncle Hugo’s has posted its bestsellers for July, with Ghost Ship at the top of the list — but that’s not the cool part. The cool part is that of the 12 bestselling trade editions for July, Lee and Miller books hold 11 spots, cheated — cheated! — of a full house by the presence of Warrior Sheep #1:  The Quest of the Warrior Sheep. (Note to self: Get a copy of Warrior Sheep #1)

5. Proving that mere planetary divides such as oceans and hemispheres mean nothing to those who call deep space home, Ghost Ship appears on the bestseller list at Galaxy Bookstore in Sydney, Australia.

WorldCon or Bust!
1. We (that’s Steve and Sharon) are going to be traveling for a few days, with a WorldCon at the end of it. This means our access to Things Internetly will be limited, first by the conditions of the train and then because we’ll be enjoying the con. So! If you should see Ghost Ship or any other Lee and Miller book or story on a bestseller list, or see a review (Amazon reviews not counting), sing out, do!

2. While we’re traveling (see #2, above) we’ll be keeping in touch somewhat via Twitter and Facebook. To join us on Twitter and share the news: Liaden Universe fans & Friends of Liad at and before the convention should try #liadens for news; @Clankorval is Sharon Lee, @bechimo is Steve Miller.

Twitter may be most useful for non-attendees for catching glimpses of the Worldcon action at Renovation where it looks like several dozen Friends of Liad will be joining the fray for a FoL fan table, parties, FoL breakfast, Lee & Miller kaffeeklatsch, L & M signings, and more. You can check up on the schedules of the intrepid Cat Farm and Confusion Factory contingent by looking over the (ahem) 70 plus page Pocket Program downloadable here.  There are some day rate and at the door memberships still available if you just can’t resist a late decision, or know someone who can make it in your stead.

3. Watch the skies — most WorldCons produce at least one Marvel or Wonder, and some produce both.

But wait, there’s more!
On SATURDAY, August 27, from 2:30 until 4 p.m. Steve and Sharon will be signing Ghost Ship (and other books. Yes, you can bring books you already own to be signed and/or personalized) at UNCLE HUGO’S SCIENCE FICTION BOOKSTORE AT 2864 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55407-1320. For more information, check out the Uncle Hugo’s site. A local meal or two with readers and fans is also likely.

Can’t make it to WorldCon?
Lee and Miller will be Guests of Honor at the following upcoming conventions — maybe we’ll see you at:

THE GREAT NEW ENGLAND STEAMPUNK EXPOSITION
September 16-18, 2011
Courtyard Marriott/Central Massachusetts Expo Center
Fitchburg, Massachusetts

http://www.thegreatnewenglandsteampunkexhibition.com/index.html

Steve and Sharon will be Guests at this Steampunk Extravaganza. Other attending luminaries include but are not limited to Abney Park, Phil and Kaja Foglio, and Jake von Slatt.

CHATTACON 37
January 20-22, 2012
Chattanooga Choo Choo
1400 Market St
Chattanooga, TN 37402

http://www.chattacon.org/

Chattacon is a classic southern convention that Steve went to several times in very early incarnations — but hasn’t been back to for more than 30 years! This year coming, as for the last several, the convention will be held at Chattanooga Choo Choo — a train station turned into a hotel — a destination worth a trip all by itself! GOH list includes Steve Miller and Sharon Lee, Laura Anne Gilman, John Picacio – Artist GoH, Rachel Caine – Special Guest, and Mark Van Name – Toastmaster

Liaden Universe® InfoDump No. 89
The Super-sized edition

This version somewhat different from the edition mailed yesterday to subscribers, due to late-breaking news from the programming folks at WorldCon.

NEW LIADEN UNIVERSE® STORY PUBLISHED TO BAEN WEBSITE
Short story “Intelligent Design” may now be read for free on the Baen Books website. The story starts here (you do have to scroll down a tiny bit to find the story). Also appearing is non-fiction “Gravity’s Punch” by Tony Daniel.

“Intelligent Design” will remain on the Baen front page through August 14. After that date, it will become part of a bundle of all the short stories premiered on the Baen front page. That compilation, also available for free, can be found here

NOTE: “Intelligent Design” will not be added to the bundle *until* it is retired from the front page — that is, after August 15.

ANOTHER LIADEN UNIVERSE® STORY! ALSO NEW!
Brand new Liaden short “Kin Ties,” the story of a dead man, his wife, and the daughter of an old and bitter enemy, will be uploaded to Splinter Universe on August 12.

Splinter Universe is a new short story feature site from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. We’ll be posting stories on an irregular basis. Some, even most, of the stories will be based in Sharon and Steve’s Liaden Universe®. However, the authors reserve the right to post a story set elsewhere, and to introduce new characters and situations.

Occasionally, the authors will also post “splinters” — character sketches, excerpts from projects that didn’t work, essays, possibly even cartoons. The current “splinter” on display are the beginning chapters of a novel entitled The Cards of Fortunate Destiny.

If you’d like to share the project’s URL, that’s great. If you want to send a dollar, that’s good, and if you want to send us $5 a month, or $1 a week, we promise you they’ll all go to the cause of keeping us full-time writers. KORVAL.COM GETS A FACELIFT
Korval.com has been on the web in one form or another since 1995. It began as a “practice” html web page entitled Authors of the Liaden Universe. From that one simple page, it grew, and grew again, then grew some more — in all directions at once.

As you can imagine, the contents of an author-grown website with a core of hand-set html can get…a little unwieldy after 16 years, so we’re rebuilding. You can view the start of the new web presence here

NOTE: If you had bookmarks linked through the old korval.com site, yes, they did stop working, and no, they won’t ever work again. You’ll need to regroup. We do apologize for the inconvenience.

PINBEAM BOOKS ELECTRONIC CATALOG COMPLETE
All of the Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbooks, as well as the other Lee, Miller and Lee-and-Miller chapbooks produced since 1995 by SRM Publisher, as well as The Tomorrow Log, have been converted to eBook formatted and may be purchased through the Nook Store, the Kindle Store, and Smashwords. Go to Pinbeam Books for easy links and listings of the content of each chapbook.

Liaden Universe® Chapbooks Becoming Available Electronically
Pinbeam Books (aka Steve and Sharon) is slowly releasing the original SRM Publisher chapbooks in electronic format.  We are first concentrating on the  Kindle and Nook, and we are making our chapbooks available without DRM.  Uploaded and available as of this writing are:  Two Tales of Korval:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number One; Allies:  AitLU Number Twelve; Halfling Moon: AitLU Number Sixteen; and Skyblaze:  AitLU Number Seventeen.

The reason for the odd order is — TTOK to practice on, then the chapbooks which contain stories that may add to the GHOST SHIP reading experience, because. . .

GHOST SHIP eArc on the Way
…the rumor, from a usually reliable source is that the eArc of Lee and Miller’s much-anticipated GHOST SHIP will be available from Webscriptions before April 30. Watch the skies, and Webscriptions

Dear Friends of Liad, and all the Ships at Sea:

Those of you who have been with us for a long time recall that our former publisher made signed editions of first-run hardcovers available to readers by pre-order only. A good number of you used to take advantage of this, and from time to time (to time to time) we hear from some of you, wondering when this will be available again.

Well. . .we and Uncle Hugo’s Bookstore have an idea about that, just in time for GHOST SHIP. But we need your help.

The scheme: Baen will tip-in (which is to say, they’ll bind in a special, extra page) signature sheets for GHOST SHIP, to meet pre-orders only. The orders will be placed with, and filled by Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore in Minneapolis, one of the great indie SF bookstores in the country. Sharon and Steve will sign as many signature pages as there are pre-orders to match.

The catch: Baen needs a guarantee of at least 100 pre-orders; it’s not cost-effective to bind in the extra page for less than that number.

This is where you — yes, YOU; we know who you are — come in.

We need a preliminary count, so we can show Baen that this Crazy Idea is gonna work, and to give Uncle Hugo’s an idea of what they’re getting into, here.

So! The Call To Action!

If you — if you really, truly, cross-your-heart-and-hope-to-die will order a first-run hardcover of GHOST SHIP signed by both authors, please send an email to this special address — ghost_shipATkorvalDOTcom (where The Usual replaces AT and DOT) and tell us how many you’ll buy.

NOTE: Cover price for GHOST SHIP is $25. Uncle Hugo’s offers a flat $6 shipping fee in the US; two GHOST SHIPs travel for the same six bucks as one GHOST SHIP. Overseas orders will have to have their postage figured on a case-by-case basis, just like we’ve been doing here at the Confusion Factory.

If we get promises for at least 100 signed copies of GHOST SHIP, the project will go forth. If we fall below that number, no copies will be available. If we go above that number — that would be awesome.

We know that this is a lot of info, so below is a recap in bullet-points:

*If you will buy a signed copy of GHOST SHIP by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller (no fibbing, now), write to ghost_shipATkorvalDOTcom and *say so* BEFORE APRIL 1, 2011

*If you have questions about this Crazy Idea, write to fledglingATkorvalDOTcom

*This is a preliminary count only. Do not sent shipping info to this address. See next point.

*Once we have a count, and assuming that count equals or exceeds 100 books, Uncle Hugo’s will set up a pre-order webpage. We will publish the URL of this webpage in all venues available to us, just like we’ve posted this InfoDumpling. You will have to go to this page and ACTUALLY ORDER your book(s). Your credit card will not be charged until your book has actually shipped.

*If the initial promise does not meet the 100 book mark, there will be no signed copies available.

*Signed copies of GHOST SHIP will not (that’s NOT) be available directly from Lee and Miller.

Phew.

Thanks so much for listening, and for your support of our work across the years.

General Note re Skyblaze and Other Schedules
Steve's cardiomyopathy, diagnosed while he was hospitalized in October for pneumonia, resulted in drug therapy, tests, and monitoring in November and December; in mid-January he an AICD/defibrillator implant to bolster the drug therapies. That procdure and resultant medical limitiations (like not being able to lift more than 5 lbs for more than six weeks!) have slowed the production of Skyblaze, which is at the printer being readied now. Steve should be able to begin packing around March 7, about 1 month behind schedule. If you have yet to preorder this chapbook you may still use the pre-order page (ignore original closing date) -- this page will be now be good through March 1, 2011.  http://www.korval.com/skyblaze/

Upcoming Free Story for Baen Website
That's right, a free Liaden story is due to hit the revitalized Baen homepage at http://baen.com/ come June. Titled "Intelligent Design," the Lee and Miller story deals with. . .well -- hold on until June and read it, so you can see what it is about. In the meantime, be sure to go over to www.baen.com and check out the stories by other Baen authors.

Lake Region TV

Sharon and Steve interviewed for Western Maine's cable TV system's program "What Are You Reading" on Saturday, February 19.  We'll let you know when -- and where -- in March the show will appear and how to order copies of the interview once it does appear.

After a relatively quiet summer we have lots of news!

THREE NEW LIADEN UNIVERSE BOOKS aimed for Baen! Right, Jennifer Jackson, our hardworking agent, brings us word that Baen Books publisher and editor Toni Weisskopf has accepted proposals from Lee & Miller for THREE new Liaden novels to be turned in before the end of 2012. Publication dates are far from set, but the base schedules usually have books appearing in print 6-9 months after they are turned in.

Tentative title #1: Dragon Ship … this is a Theo story, yes. To be turned in around or just after next year’s WorldCon — September 2011.

Tentative title #2: To be Determined. . . due to the publisher a little after New Year’s 2012 — a Surebleak-centric story, with new characters and familiar characters expanded.

Tentative title #3: Trade Secret … this is a Jethri story, following closely on the heels of Balance of Trade. This ought to be turned in before Worldcon 2012.

AFTERMATH OF HOSPITAL VISIT
In case you missed the news, Steve was hospitalized for about a week in October, due to pneumonia and complications. He’s basically recovered now (though still subject to some follow-up medical visits), but that time out put a crimp in a planning for the holiday chapbook, especially since he’s also involved in moving the SRM Publisher office *(see note below). So, yes, the usual Yule chapbook will not appear before the end of the year, for which he apologizes.

SKYBLAZE DUE IN FEBRUARY
Right, this year’s slightly delayed holiday chapbook from Lee & Miller will arrive in February, and will be titled SKYBLAZE.

We expect to start shipping on Groundhog’s Day 2011, (that’s February 2 in the US). Preorders can be made here — http://www.korval.com/skyblaze/ — through February 1, 2011. No pre-orders will be accepted after that date. The chapbook will feature a novella centered in the midst Korval’s tumultuous exit from Liad and arrival on Surebleak. Don’t miss it!  Again, that’s http://www.korval.com/skyblaze

CAROUSEL TIDES LIFTS OFF AT THE BEACH!
Sharon Lee’s Carousel Tides seaside fantasy has been getting good reception from readers and reviewers following a unique book launch party at Old Orchard Beach, Maine’s summer holiday mecca. Held at Beggar’s Ride, a one of kind art gallery and artist’s center, the Carousel Tides event brought dozens of people from as far away as Huntsville, Alabama; Maryland; Virginia, and points north and west to meet Sharon and get their very own signed copy direct form the author’s hand.  Carousel Tides is set in Archer’s Beach, Maine, an alter ego of Old Orchard Beach, and a place where the land and sea bring power together to help a guardian hold a very special gate. Carousel Tides is available at most genre shops and brick-and-mortar bookstores as well as from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online sites; both an ebook version (from Baen) and an audible.com audio book are also available. One reviewer said …  “In one reading, this book is seamless, the work of a master who knows what she’s doing. It’s the best fantasy Sharon Lee has done, I’ll even say her best book, and a keeper. It’s one to remember come award time. And even better – this book can stand alone for all eternity, like the rocks it is built upon, or it can carry the weight of a sequel.” (http://alfreda89.livejournal.com/476622.html#cutid1 )

BOSKONE UNCERTAINTY
As much as Lee and Miller like to support Boskone, this year’s convention may have to do without the authors, depending very much on scheduling and medical permissions.  Watch for future InfoDumps, or authorial blogs, for more information.

*NOTE BELOW ABOUT SRM
SRM Publisher will be moving operations during November and quite a few of the Meisha Merlin books available are in short supply. During November and until December 17 expect one day specials and other short-term offers on a changing group of books and chapbooks.  Plan B is sold out.

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE LEE AND MILLER?
Sharon and Steve will be signing at the Barnes and Noble Marketplace in Augusta, Maine on Saturday, December 4, beginning at 1 p.m.

Regarding the Yule Chapbook
As some of you know, Steve was recently hospitalized with pneumonia. He’s now home, but in the face of orders to rest, we have decided to postpone this year’s Yule chapbook.  We do anticipate doing a new Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbook in early-to-mid-2011.

Thank you for your understanding.

SRM Publisher Store Temporarily Closed
Those who shop the SRM online store will perhaps have noticed that the ordering system has been turned off.  This is also due to Steve’s illness.  Orders that were placed before the switch was thrown will be indefinitely delayed.  We very much regret this.  Those wishing a refund for their unfilled order, please write to SHARON at rolanniATkorvalDOTcom with your PayPal receipt.

We will by the end of November be closing the current SRM headquarters location and bringing the business back into the basement of the Confusion Factory.

An announcement will be made when the SRM store is again open for business.

Where in the world are Lee and Miller?
Sharon will be launching Carousel Tides from Beggar’s Ride Studio and Gallery, 39 Old Orchard Street, Old Orchard Beach, Maine, on Saturday, October 30, from 7-9 p.m.  Beggar’s Ride owner-operator Jeanne Peterson Kamfonik is hosting, catering by Roma, more information here.

Steve Miller and Sharon Lee will be signing at the Barnes and Noble Marketplace in Augusta, Maine on Saturday, December 4, beginning at 1 p.m.
