rolanni: (Coffee with Rolanni)

Yesterday, Steve and I had manymany errands to run in town, including the appointment with the second doctor, and another, with our lawyer, who we haven't seen in a few years.

New medication was introduced; paperwork was initiated; groceries were topped off.  And etcetera.

Since we were All Day In Town, we ate lunch at the world-famous Governor's Restaurant.  Steve had the liver and onions, which he pronounced excellent.  I had the chicken pot pie, which did not go above adequate.  The filling was everything I could have wished for, but the pie crust itself was industrial grade, and I wound up leaving it, and just ate the insides.  And my squash.  The squash was wonderful.

Anyhow, we arrived home in the dark, by which I mean after 4:00 pm, had a snack, caught up with email, and retired to the couch.

I don't think I reported here that we are now the proud owners of a smart television -- the kind that connects to the network, and from which movies and television shows can be streamed.  Steve has been lobbying for one of these for. . .awhile now, and we finally found one at a reasonable price from a place that would (a) deliver it, and (b) take the old television, which weighed approximately two tons, away.

Myself, I didn't see the need for this particular sort of new tech -- until last night, when I retired to the living room, exhausted from our efforts upon the day, and intent on nothing more than to finish reading my book over a glass of wine.

In turns out that, while I was answering email and updating the checkbook, Steve had introduced the new TV (do people even call these things TVs, anymore?) to the network, and had signed into Pandora, and the Instrumental Folk Channel, which is a favorite with both of us.

. . .I think I may be sold on the new technology.

Today, I still kinda feel like I've been beat with a stick, but! there's words to write, so I believe I'll have at it.

Everybody stay warm.  Or cool.  Depending on your hemisphere.

Oh, hey.  If it really is Thursday -- here's a Throwback picture.  Steve and I signing at the Augusta, Maine Barnes and Noble, sometime around Christmas, 2010.

New TVs

Ah, the joys of internet connected TVs! Though what I finally did with mine was to simply ignore the Smart stuff, and instead connect an Amazon FireTV to it. Initially, the FireTV Stick, but we found ourselves using it so much it made sense to upgrade to the full FireTV which lets us put a memory card in it. So we have stuff to watch when the power goes out and there's no internet. (But the Yamaha generator is quite happy to power up the TV and its accessories!) If you're going to be getting Amazon Prime for groceries, might as well have a good way to watch a lot of free video. And music, of course.

We just got our first pantry box from Amazon today. And! I made a viewing list or something on Amazon of movies free to stream by Prime members. Mind you, I don't know how to access the list, but that's OK. No time to watch a movie right now, anyway.

I bought my wife one for early Christmas, her birthday and MAYBE our 45th anniversary. Paid for it with a scratch ticket, so it was a GOOD one.

She is watching a series on Netflix about the Queen of England.

Pandora and SirusXM I can get over the interweb on my computer so that is how I normally listen to them.

I should probably see what internet "channels" have sprung up since I last paid attention; it's been years.

You have to set up an Amazon Video channel on your Smart TV. This probably involves walking back and forth from the television to a computer which is logged into the Amazon account that has Prime, to get an authorization code to enter into the Smart TV.

Many of the things bought in pantry boxes can also be bought in "subscribe and save" mode: sign up for product delivery monthly or every X (up to 6) months, get 5% off, 15% off in any month where you have a certain number of products arriving. (Yes, you can cancel at any time. But you do have to remember to cancel several days in advance: I just got an extra box of diapers because I forgot to cancel after transitioning our youngest to only-at-night(*).)

(*) At night, in the car if we're going any distance, at indoor playgrounds or other places where he's having so much fun he won't remember.....

This looks like Amazon's help page for setting up Amazon Video, which includes video for Prime.

Instrumental Folk

Well it took me a bit to find instrumental folk on Pandora, but I finally had the bright idea to go to Steve's Pandora site and there it was. Listening now, and I like it. Like many writers, I can only listen to instrumental music while writing - be it text or numbers on a spreadsheet - because the words, they get in the way. This is good and I thank you.
