DIVINER'S BOW PREORDERS: INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE UNCLE
The instructions appear here exactly as I received them. They also appeared in the lastest "How's Business," Uncle Hugo's newsletter. If you require further guidance, please contact UncleHugoATaolDOTcom

THE INSTRUCTIONS:
"Back in December I sent the guy who manages the website information about 3 forthcoming signed hardcovers and asked him to get them onto the website by early January so that people could start ordering them in advance, but he has been having health issues and isn’t sure when he’ll get the books listed.

"The three signed books are
1) Demon Daughter by Lois McMaster Bujold ($45.00, signed numbered tipped-in signature page), the latest in the Penric series, which we expected to receive around the end of January but we received last Monday (though we received fewer than we ordered);
2) Heart of the Mountain by Larry Correia ($30.00, signed bookplate, final volume of the Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series) which we expect to receive around the first of February;
3) Diviner’s Bow by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller ($28.00, signed bookplate signed by Sharon Lee, Liaden Universe #27) which we expect to receive at the end of March.

"Fortunately, we set up a work-around many years ago for people to securely pass along their credit card information when the regular system of ordering through the website doesn’t work:

"Go to UncleHugo.com
Click "Browse Our Merchandise" on the upper left corner of the home page
On the next page, click "Submit Credit Card Information"
On the next page, "Add to Cart" the imaginary item priced at $4.00
Checkout (as a guest -- the shopping basket's software for setting up an account with password is full of bugs and seldom works correctly)
When the shopping basket forwards your "imaginary" order to me, I'll match it up with your real order and be able to process the real order. (This requires that you send an e-mail telling me what your real order is.)"

UR SID TO JOIN LEE-MILLER ARCHIVE AT TEXAS A&M
Longtime FoL will recall Ur Sid, an eight-inch tall Teddy bear, dressed in a Scout uniform. Ur Sid attended the conventions that Steve and Sharon couldn’t make, hobnobbing with the Famous, and, like every good fan, collecting buttons and memorabilia.

The authors would occasionally meet Ur Sid at worldcons, and were always happy to see him. But his purpose was to be an Ambassador at Large for the Liaden Universe®, and in that he succeeded very well, indeed.

Ur Sid traveled between cons via the Bumpy Passage, a refurbed Scout ship that had seen better days, and he sent reports back to the Friends of Liad listserve.

Those reports are sadly lost. However, Ur Sid also kept a diary. From it, we learn that his first WorldCon was ChiCon 2000. His last con, though it’s not noted in the diary, was Heliophere 2023, where Steve and Sharon were Writer Guests of Honor. He attended the Teddy Bear Tea, and charmed the room, as always.

All good adventures do finally come to an end. Ur Sid stopped traveling when the Bumpy Passage suffered a catastrophic failure of its Struven Unit. Subsequently, he spent some years with Friend of Liad Sarge, who reunited him with the authors at PhilCon 78, in 2014.

Ur Sid is about to embark on his last trip, via FedEx. He will be escorting a shipment of Liaden Universe® books to the Lee and Miller Archive at the Cushing Memorial Library at Texas A&M. Once that duty is accomplished, Ur Sid will become part of the permanent archive. He’ll be keeping a Very Close Eye on Steve and Sharon’s Literary Legacy. And charming the curators, of course.

DOORS INTO CHANGE

Door Into Change: Fantastic Stories from Archers Beach, by Sharon Lee
This chapbook includes two short stories and a novelette set in Sharon Lee's notable small town contemporary fantasy world of Archers Beach, Maine.

"The Road to Pomona's" is a rare precursor to the Archers Beach mythos, that examines the dangers of looking too far into fey matters, if you're only a mundane human.

"The Vestals of Midnight," takes place in one of the weirder and most dangerous corners of Archers Beach--the Enterprise, where things just "come in." Only, what's come in this time are children, and they're in very great peril from the Enterprise's ruling intelligence.

Novelette "Wolf in the Wind" serves up one of the Wise Ones who oversee the Six Worlds, and who might not be as impartial as their office demands.

PRAISE FOR SHARON LEE'S CAROUSEL SERIES
"This is how things would be if the fae world actually did impinge on our own world." -- SFRevu

". . . a virtuoso ride, full of the spirit of the carnival, fully aware of the thinness of the veil between the worlds and expert at managing to twitch it aside just enough to matter." -- Alma A. Hromic

RIBBON DANCE CENTRAL

Ribbon Dance, the 26th novel set in the Liaden Universe® created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, is the sequel to 2020's Trader's Leap. In it, we follow the Tree-and-Dragon Trade Team headed by Master Trader Shan yos'Galan, ably assisted by new Trader Padi yos'Galan, as they attempt to establish if Colemeno, recently emerged from Rastov's Dust can be made to anchor an exciting new trade route, while attempting to avoid falling afoul of local custom.

1 Ribbon Dance will be published in hardcover, ebook on June 4 2024. We await news of an audiobook edition.

2 The eARC will be available from Baen.com on March 15

3 Uncle Hugo WILL BE accepting preorders for signed copies of the hardcover in mid-March.

LEE AND MILLER SHORT STORIES UPCOMING

The following upcoming anthologies include stories by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller:
1 Chicks in Tank Tops, edited by Jason Cordova, Baen, February 7 includes Liaden Universe® story "Gadreel's Folly."

2 Familiars, edited by Patricia Bray, and Joshua Palmatier, Zombies Need Brains, August, includes "Familiarity."

3 The Last Train to Kepler-283c, edited by David Boop, Baen, November 5, includes Liaden Universe® story "The Last Train to Clarkesville."

PLAN B ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Baen is reprinting Plan B, the sequel to Carpe Diem, in a spiffy anniversary paperback in October. The book will include a new afterword from the authors.

DOUBLE VISION COMING SOON

Double Vision is just that – a collection combining our two different visions. In many cases there are two different understandings of story, some written individually and some written together, things that you may not have seen if you’re dyed in the wool Liaden fans but didn’t tread – or were too young for! – the larger market of anthologies and magazines that helped us get our single and joint careers in motion.

If you are a fan of our Liaden stories, or of Archer’s Beach, for that matter, you’ll find some familiar themes, ideas, and character types … if you’re just started reading our work you might consider Double Vision a kind of primer on the question where we and the Liaden Universe came from.

This Pinbeam Books edition of Double Vision replaces the long-out-of-print SRM Publisher edition published 15 years ago – you can consider this a 15th anniversary edition of that 2009 collection if you like. Most of the text of that edition has been retained but some additional editing and reformatting has been performed.

NOTE: The cover of this edition is used by special permission of the artist, Chris McGrath – it was previously used for the Meisha Merlin edition of Low Port, edited by Lee and Miller.

TRADE LANES NEWS

From Steve and Sharon: "Yes, Trade Lanes is much later than we'd like. Steve’s recasting the book since an insidious plot miscue meant two of the core threads actually conflict with established Liaden Universe® canon. Much of the novel is being rebuilt word by word. At this point, we anticipate turning in a finished manuscript in 2025."

WHAT'S IN THE WORKS

Sharon is lead on the sequel to Ribbon Dance (title TBA), which is due to Baen in September.

PR PROJECT: PULL QUOTES

Baen is asking its authors to provide them with fun pull-quotes from their books, for an upcoming PR push. We are therefore asking you, our readers, to help us out. This is your chance to see your favorite Liaden Universe® quote up in lights.

Go here to read the instructions.

SALVAGE RIGHT AUDIOBOOK UPDATE
Eileen Stevens will be narrating the audiobook edition of the 25th Liaden Universe® novel, Salvage Right. Steve and Sharon spoke with Eileen at length on Sunday; she expects to begin recording at the end of the week of November 6. No word yet on the publication date at Audible, but that day is much nearer, now.

RIBBON DANCE PUBLICATION
The 26th novel set in the Liaden Universe®, RIBBON DANCE will be published in hardcover and ebook editions on June 24, 2024, and will be available from All of the Usual Suspects.

RIBBON DANCE is the direct sequel to 2020's TRADER'S LEAP, following the continuing efforts of Master Trader Shan yos'Galan to open new and profitable trade routes for Clan Korval.

The blurb: On a world where cake is a necessity, it takes the Grid to protect the civilized and the deaf from the dire influences of the ambient and to keep the chaotic Haosa at bay.

Having arrived at recently Dust-bound Colemeno, Trader Padi yos’Galan is essential to Master Trader Shan yos’Galan’s plan to recoup Korval’s clan fortunes by establishing new routes for the clan’s tradeship. Shan’s inner Healer insists Padi come to terms with her as-yet unplumbed psychic abilities, which might place her in the top tier of dramliz, if she can learn control.

Padi yearns to concentrate on trade, but Colemeno’s fey ambient and deadly long-term politics combine to bring her face-to-face with the Haosa, and in particular with the mysterious and untouchable Tekelia, as Korval’s trade mission’s necessity of a port audit collide with a cruel history of murder, deception, and brutality. Amid the dangers, Padi unexpectedly finds herself eagerly exploring her dramliz side when faced with the unspoken powers of the ambient, the sky-filling energy of the ribbon dance, and Tekelia’s mutable eyes.

From Every Storm: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 35
Ebook to be released on November 23, 2023. Paper book available on or slightly before that date. The ebook is now available for pre-order at Apple, Amazon, BN, Kobo, among others.

Summary:
From Every Storm
is a chapbook compilation of three Liaden Universe® stories, one of them never before published. The storms of the title spring not so much from the desert or the deep blue sea but from the minds and hearts of humanity, where greed wars with truth and justice, and where sometimes the supposed end of storm is a mere hurricane eye portending greater potential for damage ahead.

First up is "Standing Orders," a finalist for 2022’s WSFA’s Small Press Award for Short Fiction, originally published in Derelict, a 2021 ZNB anthology. What happens at the end of a war that no one really won, where victory came at the price of acting more like the enemy than the High Command ever should?

Next is the previously unissued "Songs of the Fathers" a story dealing with Shan yos’Galan’s sometime trade partner Lomar Fasholt and her family as they struggle to follow her Mother’s religion as it morphs from loving to acquisitive, from flexible to aggressively rule-bound. Lomar’s a good mother and wife but her self-exiled family’s suffered greatly through this storm of changes. Will they find hope amidst the tumult?

Finally, there’s "From Every Storm a Rainbow," the 2021 holiday story from Baen.com, wherein Sinit Caylon comes face to face with the perfidy of her absent brother while the accountant’s guild is trying to help Clan Mizel come about after years of of her mother’s abdication of responsibilities to Ran Eld. Sinit thinks the storm must be about over until it become obvious that between them her mother and brother may have fatally endangered the clan’s brightest future.

"Gadreel's Folly," lead story in the anthology Chicks in Tank Tops, edited by Jason Cordova, Baen Books, publication date January 3, 2023. "Folly" is Kasagaria Mikelsyn's origin story. You may preorder Chicks in Tank Tops from your favorite bookstore. Those who indulge may purchase the earc from Baen.com.

Scout's Progress 20th anniversary mass market reprint, February 28, 2023, featuring a gorgeous new cover by Sam Kennedy and a new foreword by the authors. Available for preorder from your favorite on-line bookstore.

Salvage Right, Lee and Miller's 25th Liaden Universe® novel, July 4, 2023. Gorgeous cover by David Mattingly. Hardcover available for preorder at your favorite bookstore. There will be an ebook edition available on publication day, but, as we all know by now, not all Baen ebooks are available as preorders.

Regarding signed copies: We have spoken to the Uncle and he is willing to handle orders for signed copies of Salvage Right – HOWEVER, he will NOT be accepting preorders until somewhat closer to the publication date. This information is provided to help you to plan your ordering and budgeting. An InfoDumpling will be dispatched when preordering for signed books opens.

Regarding eARC: We assume that the lack of a ebook preorder button means that there will be an eARC edition available from Baen, 3 or 4 months prior to publication of the hardcover.

Regarding Salvage Right cover art: David Mattingly makes a limited number of prints of his covers available for sale. If you would like a print of the Salvage Right art (which is, honestly, just gorgeous), go here: type "Salvage Right" into the search box, and choose your size from those offered.

About Salvage Right:
With origins in the Old Universe, the malevolent, acquisitive intelligence of Tinsori Light sought to infect others with itself, and send those agents out into the wide new universe to infect even more.

For centuries, two heroes stood between Tinsori Light and the vulnerable universe – Light Keepers Jen Sin yos'Phelium and Lorith of the Sanderat.

Just when it seemed that they – merely human – must fail, Tinsori Light, enfeebled by aged systems, succumbed to the stress of a unique spatial event – and died, leaving the station a shell.

Luckily, the light keepers have back-up. A mismatched team of arcane specialists are on-station, working non-stop to preserve the Light, build trustworthy systems, and open the refurbished station for business.

In fact, ships are already incoming, and it becomes a matter of urgency to sort friend from foe. In particular, the Lyre Institute wishes to acquire Tinsori Light, and will do anything, spend anyone, to achieve that goal.

"The Last Train to Clarkesville," Last Train Outta Kepplar-283c, edited by David Boop, Baen Books, publication date Winter 2023. We were challenged to write a Liaden Universe® Western.

Fair Trade audiobook. This has been a long time coming, and it ain't here yet, but! We had a wonderful, lively conference with narrator Eileen Stevens, as she was getting ready to start recording, so we hope that the wait won't be too much longer.

CONVENTION APPEARANCES

Lee and Miller have applied to be in-person panelists at Boskone 60 (February 17-19, 2023). There is a new process in place this year, and we've not yet heard back concerning our applications. More news when we have some.

Lee and Miller will be Writer Guests of Honor at Heliosphere, April 28-30, 2023 in Piscataway NJ. Artist Guest of Honor will be David Mattingly.

CAREER MILESTONES
*As above, Salvage Right is the 25th Liaden Universe® novel.
*It is also Lee and Miller's
29th collaborative novel, and 100th collaborative work.
*It is Sharon Lee's 34
th novel.
*And! It brings Lee-and-Miller's total lifetime collaborative words written to Three million, seven hundred fifty-eight thousand, four hundred and eight.

But we haven't stopped, there. "The Last Train to Clarkesville" is Lee and Miller's 102nd collaborative work, and we have more in the pipeline.

Thank you all for sticking with us through 35 years of telling stories!

FAIR TRADE News
FAIR TRADE is the 24th novel set in the Liaden Universe® created and written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. It is, in addition, the third book in the so-called "Jethri arc." Previous volumes were: BALANCE OF TRADE and TRADE SECRET.

For those who indulge the eARC is available from Baen Books ONLY. Here's the link.

For those who are waiting -- patiently! -- for the hardcover to be published in May, and would like to have a signed hardcover, you may preorder your book from Uncle Hugo ONLY. Here's the link.
Please Note: Personalizations are not available this year. The Uncle is just getting his new Real World Store set up, and it's felt that the additional craziness of trying to keep track of personalized books would only be a recipe for error. Thank you for your understanding.

LIADEN UNIVERSE® CONSTELLATION, VOLUME 5 . . .
. . .is out in trade paper, and available from your favorite bookstore.
Remember, the Constellations collect stories that have already appeared elsewhere into One! Convenient! Package!

Table of Contents: Authors' Foreword, Fortune's Favors, Opportunity to Seize, Shout of Honor, Command Decision, Dark Secrets, A Visit to the Galaxy Ballroom, The Gate that Locks the Tree, Preferred Seating, Ambient Conditions, Dead Men Dream

The Series Hugo and the Liaden Universe®
There have been Questions, mostly around the fact that there was no Liaden Universe® novel published in 2021 (ref “fuck cancer”), and therefore how can the series possibly be eligible for the Series Hugo?

We checked with Appropriate Authority, to be certain we weren't misleading anyone, and here is how the Series Hugo works:

First, in order to nominate works for the Hugo Ballot, you must have been a member of ChiCon8, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention, on or before January 31, 2022 OR you must have been a member of DisCon III, the 79th WorldCon.

Second, if you meet the above stipulation, you have until March 15 to nominate. Only members of ChiCon8 may vote on the final ballot.

Third, specific to the Series Hugo: The Liaden Universe® is already established as eligible for this award. That is, there are already (many more than) 240,000 published words of Liaden Universe® out there in the literary world.

Since we have crossed the eligibility threshold of 240,000 published words in-series, there only needs to be one installment of any length in-series for the Nominating Year — which is 2021.

There were four installments of the Liaden Universe® published in 2021. I will list them at the end of this posting. This is important because, when you enter a series into the nomination form, it asks you for a “2021 Example from Series.” This is where you enter your choice of the four shorter Liaden works that were published in 2021. Those works are:

SHORT STORY
“Standing Orders,” Derelict, Zombies Need Brains, July 2021 (5,775 words)

NOVELETTE
“From Every Storm a Rainbow,” Baen.com (link to free story) December 2021 (7,957 words)

“Our Lady of Benevolence,” Bread Alone: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34, Pinbeam Books, November 2021 (14,500 words)

NOVELLA
“Dead Men Dream,” Change State: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 32, Pinbeam Books, March 2021 (19,800 words)

As an aside, all of the works listed above are also eligible for Hugo nominations in their own categories.

Everybody good?

Good.

Please do consider nominating the Liaden Universe® as one of your five choices for the Series Hugo. Please mention the Liaden Universe® in whatever Hugo discussions you may be having.

Why is the series worthy of the Series Hugo? Well — it’s a good, solid piece of work, if I do say so. The Liaden Universe® currently includes 23 published novels, and dozens of short stories — closing in on 5 million words. The very first Liaden Universe® novel, Agent of Change, was published in February 1988. The twenty-fourth Liaden Universe® novel, Fair Trade, will be published in May 2022. The series is qualified — perhaps overqualified — for the Series Hugo.

Who's Writing What for When?
Lee and Miller are under contract to Baen Books for three Liaden Universe® novels after FAIR TRADE, which will be published in May. Those novels are:

1 TRADE LANES, the sequel to Fair Trade — Steve Miller, Lead Writer

2 SALVAGE RIGHT — Sharon Lee, Lead Writer

3 A Liaden Novel to be Named Later — Sharon Lee, Lead Writer probably? At the moment, this is looking like a return to the Redlands and checking in with Padi, Tekelia, Aunt Astra, Eet, and the gang. This could change, as all things may change, and only reflect our thoughts at the moment.

For those who have been playing along at home for a long time, the above three novels complete the Triple Threat contract with Baen.

We do not at the moment have any short works under contract, but that, too, could change.

BOSKONE 59 Schedule
Steve Miller will be a virtual panelist at Boskone 59, February 18-20. Boskone is a Hybrid Convention this year.

Steve’s schedule is below. All times are Eastern Standard.

VIRTUAL: Unhappy Endings Format: Panel
18 Feb 2022, Friday 8pm – 8:50pm, Marina IV (Westin)
Jane Yolen, Steve Miller, Julie Czerneda, Paul Di Filippo (M), Ada Palmer

Tragic plays from Shakespeare, Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides are still with us … hundreds, even thousands of years later. Not all stories let the protagonist triumph — sometimes they lose; sometimes they even die losing. Some science fiction and fantasy writers’ unhappily ending stories are quite popular. Why do they succeed? Why do other such stories fail — even fail so hard their authors never try to write unhappily ever after?

VIRTUAL: My Favorite Character
18 Feb 2022, Friday 9pm – 9:50pm, Marina IV (Westin)
Olav Rokne, Jen Gunnels, Steve Miller, David Marshall, James Moore (M)

Google once estimated that humanity had published 129,864,880 books. If about half were SF/F/H trilogies — never mind, let’s ask it this way: from all the speculative fiction stories ever published, who’s your favorite character, and why? Heroine, villain, sidekick, romantic interest, alien bystander? Would you like to meet, have dinner with, or be that person? What does your choice say about your own character?

VIRTUAL: Solo Reading
19 Feb 2022, Saturday 12:30 – 12:55, Marina IV (Westin)
Steve Miller

Watch the skies and then watch us!
Lee and Miller have a Zoom event coming up later this month -- chatting with Griffin Barber about Liaden Universe® Constellation, Volume 5. See or listen to this podcast here.

Where in the World are Lee and Miller?
Lee and Miller are members of ChiCon8. We hope to attend, but we are keeping a weather eye out.

Liaden Universe® InfoDump Number 128
News from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's Liaden Universe® and beyond!
November 9 2021

PUBLISHING NEWS

1 BREAD ALONE: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34 will be published on November 25, 2021. BREAD ALONE collects all of the so-called "bakery" stories into one volume. The stories included are: "Degrees of Separation," "Fortune's Favors," "Block Party," and "Our Lady of Benevolence." The first three stories are reprints – that means they have been published previously – "Our Lady . . . " is original to this chapbook. At the time this InfoDump was put to bed, preorders were available from Amazon. The other vendors will eventually have the book in stock, but for right now, you may PREorder from Amazon ONLY. Here's your link.

2 The Baen reissue of LOCAL CUSTOM will go on sale as an ebook and mass market paperback on November 30, 2021. You may read sample chapters here.  Art by Sam R. Kennedy

3 A LIADEN UNIVERSE® CONSTELLATION, VOLUME 5 is now available from Baen.com as an eARC. You can either purchase the eARC or read a sample (or, yanno, do both) at this link.
3a You will be able to buy the ebook/paper edition on February 1, 2022 from all of the Usual Suspects. Cover art by Sam R. Kennedy

4 Liaden Universe® novel FAIR TRADE, the third featuring Jethri Gobelyn, a Terran apprenticed to a Liaden master trader, will be published by Baen on May 3, 2022. Cover art by David B. Mattingly. The hardcover may be preordered at your favorite bookstore; the ebook may not. There will be an ebook, but because of Baen's tradition of providing an eARC before actual publication, the ebook cannot be preordered (we are repeating what we're told here – further questions may be addressed to Baen at the email address on the site). We do not yet have a date for the appearance of the eARC nor any news on an audiobook – watch the skies.

5 Liaden Universe® short story "Gadreel's Folly" will be included in the anthology, GIRLS IN TANK TOPS, edited by Jason Cordova. Projected publication date is late 2022, from Baen. Contributors include Lee and Miller, Esther Friesner, David Drake, Kevin Ikenberry, Robert E. Hampson, Joelle Presby, Marisa Wolf, Lydia Sherrer, G. Scott Huggins, and a few others. Editor Jason Cordova says: "It's a great mixture of humor and action, with a few turning a little dark. The authors have turned in everything from SF to alternate history to fantasy. It's a great blend of genres with one unifying theme: a girl and her tank."

6  For those who may have missed it, the mass market edition of TRADER'S LEAP, the 23rd novel set in the Liaden Universe® is now available from your favorite bookstore. Cover art by David B. Mattingly.

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE LEE AND MILLER
Steve and Sharon will not – that's NOT – be attending DisCon III.

Liaden Universe® InfoDump No. 126

TRADER'S LEAP:  ALL THE NEWS
Trader's Leap is the 23rd Liaden Universe® novel, written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.  It is the immediate sequel to Alliance of Equals (the 19th novel in the Liaden Universe®) with the action taking place concurrently with the latter part of Neogenesis and with Accepting the Lance (the 21st and 22nd novels in the Liaden Universe®).  Trader's Leap will be published by Baen on December 1, 2020.  Yes, there will be an ebook edition published at that time.  You cannot preorder it because Reasons.  We expect, but do not know that there will be an audiobook, as well.

1  The eARC of Trader's Leap is now available for purchase from Baen.  Here's your link

2  You may pre-order signed copies (no personalizations this year, sorry) of the Trader's Leap hardcover, from Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore.  Here's your link.

3  If you're not sure you want to commit to Trader's Leap, you may try out the sample chapters at this link.

4.  If you're STILL not sure, here's what a couple of discerning readers have to say about the early edition of Trader's Leap.

NALINI SINGH (author of the Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter series):  "I recently read an early copy of Trader's Leap by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller and found it a brilliant, immersive adventure of a book."

DON BLYLY (owner-operator of Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore and long-time science fiction reader): "I’ve been recommending this series since 1988...  I enjoyed this book more than any other book in the series for several years (and I’ve enjoyed them all)."

THE WRONG LANCE AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

In early 2018, the writing team of Lee and Miller "threw away" the first 70,000 words of a Liaden novel.  They weren't bad words; merely, they weren't the right words.  The book that rose from the ashes of this failed draft, Accepting the Lance, was published by Baen Books.  Some of the 70,000 words of failed draft found their way into that novel, but about 44,000--didn't.  They were still perfectly good words; strung together, they presented an interesting story, and an amusing look at what not to do when writing a direct sequel in a long-running-series.  Lee and Miller decided to make these words available to their readers.

The Wrong Lance, as the failed draft was titled, was originally posted at splinteruniverse.com and at Lee and Miller's Patreon page patreon/leeandmiller.  The chapters have now been removed, and compiled into this volume.

The Wrong Lance is a non-canon Liaden story.  This means that nothing that is reported in its pages actually happened in the Liaden Universe®.  For an accurate report of what did happen at Surebleak during the TerraTrade Survey, please consult Accepting the Lance, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.

You may pre-order the ebook edition of The Wrong Lance from All the Usual Suspects.  Follows a partial, but by no means complete list:  Apple, Nook, Kobo, Angus & Robertson   Amazon

YES, The Wrong Lance will also be offered from Baen, on October 27.  Baen does not support pre-orders for Pinbeam Books publications.
YES, there will be a paper edition, but Amazon cannot seem to get it together to allow people to pre-order paper copies, so that edition, too, will be available on or near October 27.

WHERE LEE AND MILLER HAVE BEEN AND WHERE THEY WILL BE
On Sunday, August 30, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller joined Debra Doyle and Jim Macdonald virtually at AlbaCon in the Afternoon.  There were readings, a little conversation, and some Q&A.  The event was recorded, and AlbaCon is looking for a good hosting site.  As soon as a link is available, we'll send it along. NOTE: Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are on-board as Writer Guests of Honor for AlbaCon 2021, date and venue TBD.

On Wednesday, December 2, at 7 pm PACIFIC, Mysterious Galaxy will host Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.  We'll be reading from Trader's Leap, talking trash, answering questions, and possibly sipping some wine (7 pm Pacific being 10 pm Maine time).  It should be a whole lot of fun and we look forward to seeing you there.  To sign up for this event, follow this link (yes, we know Sharon's name is spelled wrong; we've asked that this Be Fixed).

AND NOW A WORD FROM STEVE MILLER

September means that annual genre award season is fast approaching, and alas, very often “Best of Year” lists start circulating by Halloween, with a quarter of the year yet to go! The problem for us is that with the recent 1) proliferation of awards and 2) proliferation of authors, and 3) multiple complications in our lives that have been quite distracting – we don’t know what awards (especially small press and convention awards) our work for 2020 may be/will be eligible for.

If you, dear readers, know of an award you think our work should be nominated for – can you do a favor for us and your fellow readers by making that nomination? If the nomination must come from a publisher (in some cases that’s us) let us know. If it must come from a nominator not yourself but who you know – please pass a suggestion on. If it requires submitting samples to specific readers, let us know.

So far we know that the Liaden novel Trader’s Leap will be out December 2. We also know we’ll have “Preferred Seating” a Liaden short story (5,065 words) at Baen.com in November. Those already suffer from the “late in the year syndrome” – so please watch out for them and consider them as is appropriate. Also, Pinbeam Books (that’s us) published “The Gate That Locks The Tree” – a novella at 21,818 words, number 30 in the Adventures in the Liaden Universe series – on February 20.

Aside those items, this year our publication lists includes two genuine oddities: Splinter Universe Presents -- a chapbook of partials and odds and end. Not a novel, not a short story, a collection of splinters – maybe it could go under “Related works” category some awards allow … in any case, if you admired it and think it worthy, nominate or suggest it … it came out April 13, via Pinbeam Books. But wait, that’s not all! – another Splinter Universe Presents item via Pinbeam Books – The Wrong Lance – comes out October 27. That one is the “didn’t quite work” start to the book that became Accepting the Lance ... again. Hard to know what award category it might come under, if any; I note it was published briefly online before moving to more formal publication status.

Thank you for listening. Thank you for your good will and your support of our work during this 30-odd year journey.

Liaden Universe® InfoDump No. 125

Ten Things Make an InfoDump

Thing One:  Splinter Universe Presents!
Splinter Universe is undergoing housecleaning and a slight revamp, with a biggish new project in mind.  This meant removing material that has been on the site since the early 2000s.  Fans of the site were concerned that the content would be "lost forever," so, instead, it's been collected into this large -- 200+ page -- volume:  Splinter Universe Presents!

The book includes bits of novels or stories that stalled; outtakes from published novels; character sketches; and discovery drafts. Everything is Liaden in nature, but none of the collected pieces are complete. They are of possible interest to devoted fans of the Liaden Universe®; they are not guaranteed to be everyone's cuppa. Every one of these bits has been previously published on Splinter Universe, for the amusement of the authors and the interest of those same devoted fans. There is nothing new, save the Authors' Introduction.

Here are some sell links:

Thing Two:  Speaking of Splinter Universe
Several new splinters have been added to the site including an outtake from Alliance of Equals, an early vision of what Daav yos'Phelium did while he was separated from his clan, a glimpse of Shan as he prepares for his first contract marriage, and a fun little piece of weirdness featuring a Zork.

Go here to share in the fun!

And watch the skies for news of that new project mentioned above.

Thing Three:  Sharon Lee reads The Vestals of Midnight
This is Sharon reading her short Archers Beach story "The Vestals of Midnight," available to the public for the first time!  Here's your link:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/34148316

Thing Four:  Barnburner and Gunshy Audiobooks
Sharon Lee has contracted with Tantor Audiobooks to produce her cozy Maine mysteries, Barnburner and Gunshy as audiobooks.  Narrator is Traci Odom.  Watch the skies for news of availability.

If you haven't read Sharon's cozies, they are available in ebook format from All the Usual Suspects.  Below are links to Baen's catalog pages, and previews.

Thing Five:  Pinbeam Books
Pinbeam Books is Lee and Miller's indie publishing arm.  It is the publisher of the Adventures in the Liaden Universe®  series, the most recent titles there being The Gate that Locks the Tree, Shout of Honor, and Fortune's Favors.  Pinbeam is also the publisher of various of Steve Miller and Sharon Lee's separate and non-Liaden work, as well as the newly released Splinter Universe Presents!

Here's the link to the Pinbeam Books catalog.

Thing Six: Upcoming Liaden Books from Baen
The mass market edition of Accepting the Lance will be published on October 27. Lance came out in December 2019 in hardcover, ebook, and audio editions.  Here's your link.

The SEQUEL to Accepting the Lance (yes, the SEQUEL), Trader's Leap, will be published on December 1, and is now available for pre-order from Amazon. Here's your link.Steve is working on Night of Masks, the sequel to Trade Secret.  The work on this is going slower than we would like, for Reasons explained under Thing Nine, below; as a result, we do not have a publication date at this time.

Thing Seven:  New Short Story at Baen.com
In mid-November, brand-new Liaden story "Preferred Seating" will be published, free! on Baen.com.

Thing Eight:  Lee and Miller GOH
Assuming Circumstances allow -- Sharon and Steve will be Writer Guests of Honor at AlbaCon, September 11-13, 2020, in Albany, New York.

Thing Nine:  Boring Health Stuff, Author Edition
Those who have been following Sharon's blog will recall that she had a mastectomy in mid-March. She has healed well from that surgery, but now there are other therapies being explored to finish the job.  As things stand now, she will be undergoing radiation, and may be (we're waiting for test results as this newsletter is being written) slotted in for chemotherapy.

Thing Ten: Baen UNtravelling Roadshow
Join us right here at https://www.facebook.com/BaenBooks at 4 PM, 4/18 for a presentation featuring David Weber, Eric Flint, Catherine Asaro, Wil McCarthy, Robert E. Hampson, Robert Buettner, Charles E. Gannon, Griffin Barber, Sharon Lee, Steve Miller and the Baen Editorial team. Learn about our new books...and have your chance to WIN free EBOOKS.

YES, THERE WILL BE MORE LIADEN NOVELS
Contrary to the rumor that has taken hold in parts of the internet, there are five more novels set in the Liaden Universe® scheduled.

TRADER'S LEAP, the 23rd novel in the Liaden Universe® will be published in November/December 2020.  This novel follows the adventures of Shan yos'Galan, Priscilla Mendoza, and the crew of the Dutiful Passage, as they struggle to fulfill the duty put on them by Delm Korval -- establish new and profitable trade routes before the clan runs out of money!

Steve is even now working on the direct sequel to Trade Secret, featuring Jethri Gobelyn.  That novel is due to be turned in at the end of May 2020, and will be published some time in 2021. This will be Liaden Universe® novel Number 24.

After that, Steve is lead on another book starring Jethri Gobelyn -- the sequel to the book above.  It is due to be turned in January 2021.  This will be Liaden Universe® novel Number 25.

There are two more books contracted after those  listed above, to wit! Liaden Universe® novels Number 26 and 27.  We don't know what those will be about, yet.

To sum up -- there are five more Liaden books in the pipeline, which is enough to keep us all busy.

BOSKONE
Sharon and Steve will be panelists at Boskone, February 14-16, 2020.

ALBACON
Sharon and Steve will be Writer Guests of Honor at AlbaCon, September 11-13, 2020, in Albany, New York.  Those interested can check in at AlbaCon's facebook page.

Getcher Red Hot Signed Copies of Liaden Universe® Constellation IV!

Liaden Universe® Constellation IV will be published on June 3.

You may now pre-order signed and/or personalized copies of Liaden
Universe® Constellation IV from Uncle Hugo’s SF Bookstore.

Here's your link.

For the purposes of this discussion “signed” means “the authors will
write their names on the half-title.”  “Personalized” means “the authors
will write their names on the half-title *and* a short inscription of
your choice.”  Note:  The authors reserve the right to refuse a
particular personalization if they should find it offensive for any
reason.  The authors’ judgement in this may not be appealed.  Should the
authors refuse a personalization, they will still — and only — sign
their names.

Included in this volume are:  The Authors’ Foreword, “Street Cred,” “Due
Diligence,” “Friend of a Friend,” “Cutting Corners,” “Block Party,”
“Degrees of Separation,” “Excerpts from Two Lives,” “Revolutionists.”

Fortune's Favors:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 28

. . .is on sale as an ebook at Baen, BN, Apple, and a host of others.

If you were an early adopter of the Kindle edition, you received a
broken book.  Amazon reports that, as of April 25, it has fixed its
error concerning the “Start of Book,” and all new customers will
download a book that will open to the first chapter.  If you downloaded
a broken book, you may delete your book , and re-download the repaired
book to your device.  There is no charge to do this.

Watch the Skies!

Shout of Honor: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 29 is in
production, and will, in a well-run universe, be available for purchase
on May 15.  Watch the skies.  . . .Honor is a brand-new novella which
looks in on some briefly-seen characters.  It happens in-between
Neogenesis and Accepting the Lance.

More Titles in the Pipeline!

The second Liaden Universe® novel, Conflict of Honors, will be
reissued in mass market from Baen Books on October 28.  Mark your calendars!

Accepting the Lance will be published by Baen Books on December 2, in
hardcover, and ebook editions.  ...Lance is the direct sequel to
Neogenesis.  You will be able to preorder signed copies of Accepting the
Lance from Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore after Labor Day.  So, yanno, mark
your calendars there, too.

Eye Candy!

One of the great pleasures of our writing is that we get to inspire art
by excellent artists, and when we can, add some to our walls. Among our
recent additions are the Alan Pollock cover art for Fledgling --
available here -- and some David Mattingly cover art for the Liaden books -- find some here.

Upcoming Conventions

Steve and Sharon have had a rough couple years In Real Life, and are
mostly sticking close to home this year.  We are open to invitations
from conventions for 2020.

RELEASE THE VIRGINS! KICKSTARTER
Release the Virgins is an original anthology built around the phrase -- wait for it -- "Release the virgins."  No, we don't know why.  But!  It sounded like fun and Steve agreed to do a story; then Sharon agreed to do a story, too, joining a host of other writers with a playful streak, including Jody Lynn Nye, David Gerrold, Cecelia Tan, Lawrence Watt-Evans, Shariann Lewitt -- and more!  The campaign runs until June 17.

LEE AND MILLER WILL NOT ATTEND WORLDCON 76
We had intended to attend WorldCon; we had budgeted time and money; arranged schedules, and then -- in late February, we looked at a house in town (we have long been looking to move into town, closer to services and conveniences), fell in love with the place, made an offer, and -- the long and short of it is that, all the money and time we had budgeted for attending WorldCon instead went to moving into the new house.  We're very sorry that we won't be at the con with our friends and readers, old and new.  But we're very happy with our new situation.

On the topic of conventions -- this is the first time since 1997, that we haven't had a convention, or three, on the schedule.  That feels. . .strange, indeed.

Everyone who is going to WorldCon -- have fun!
