This post is reflected, though slightly amended, from Facebook.

I have a question, O, Internets:

A little background, first. Many years ago, after we had sold our first three books, and been cut loose by our publisher -- but hadn't yet given up hope of finding a new publisher, and selling more books, it was said in some quarters that Miller and Lee were "writer's writers" and as such would probably not be able to make a living, as writers. There's some precedence for this, as writers read differently than even experienced readers, and tend to be delighted by V. Strange Things™, and in general Just Aren't The Target Market.

There are a couple of cures for being a "writer's writer." One, of course, is to Take the Memo and quit writing. The other is to learn how to write to the market. We didn't do either of those things, either because (1) we're idiots (a theory that has some strong evidence supporting it), or (2) we knew that sometimes it takes longer than 2 years and/or 3 books to find a readership, and that, afforded enough time, we would find that readership.

So, here's my question -- actually TWO questions:

1. When did you -- yes, YOU -- start reading the Liaden Universe®, and!

2. Are you a writer?

I started with Local Custom whenever that was. I bought all your Meisha Merlin published books as soon as they came out.
I am a commercial artist - all visual, nothing written!

I began reading them back in college, around 1990-ish. I'm not particularly a writer though I have dabbled. :)

Found Conflict of Honors original paperback on the bookstore shelf back in the day. Read them all and kept hoping for more. Was delighted to find them again in ebook form on Embid back in the prehistoric days of the internet which put me back on the look-out for your books and have been scooping them up ever since.

I'm not a writer and have no ambitions in that direction. There are two writers in the family but my urge to create takes a different format.

I started from the beginning with AoC, and have read every book since (Thank you for them), but then I knew Steve from before then.

Not a writer.

Early 90s. Found Carpe Diem at the local library. Then tracked down the other 2 (also at the library). Either they were out of print by that stage, or just not available in NZ (long way from anywhere, and pretty much only the major, major SF titles in shops here at that time - pre-Internet and Amazon).
Acquired Plan B when it was released through Meisha Merlin.

Not a fiction writer - I write technical stuff for work - but never had the character's voice in my head....

I started with Agent of Change, and I believe it was when it was first published, more or less. I was living in Germany at the time, so I probably bought it either at the local Stars & Stripes bookstore on base (ours carried a fair amount of F & SF) or at Uncle Hugo's during one of my trips home. (I used to hit that store & Uncle Edgar's early during my visits, and then ship books back to Germany by the box full!)

No, I'm not a writer - unless you count writing/editing various newsletters for clubs I belong to. It's not fiction writing, but it did give me an appreciation for a well constructed, coherent sentence!

I picked up Agents of Change in paperback on a whim in a bookstore, liked, but did not love it. Felt like i walked into the middle of something.

Years later, I bought "Partners in Necessity" and was reasonably happy, then read "Pilots Choice" and fell in love.

Not a writer, a *reader*.

I found a CD with sample chapters while at an AlbaCon in Schenectady. It took a bit to get around to trying one or two. Usually I know if I want to read a book after a few paragraphs (and I definitely know when I don't want to read a book). I was surprised that the "samples" were often multiple chapters. But I was hooked. I've got Liaden stories and books (and others) in paperback, hard cover, UBK, EBK, EPub, MOBI, txt, MP3 formats, though not all formats for all books/stories. Totally love the series, if that's not obvious. I read the blog because I like the news (cats and books and authors in their natural habitat) and I enjoy your voice (and turns of phrase) and the occasional snark or rant, and the even less occasional shopping info. I bought an album from the Waybacks because of your link. I am not a writer, I am a fan and buyer of books.

During the hiatus between the first three and any hope (on our part) of any more. (People on GEnie or usenet raved about them and a copy of the third one was being passed around by postal service so we could read it, too.)

And yes.

Liaden Universe Question

1. I was loaned your original paperbacks by another fantasy reader and eventually purchased my own copies (used). I'm so glad you've continued the saga.

2. Yes, I do write, but am unpublished as yet.

1. Available evidence (dates of publication and the fact that they were purchased new) indicates that I began reading the Liaden Universe® in 1988, first with Conflict of Honors, soon followed by Agent of Change, with Carpe Diem following as soon as it came out. I was, you might say, hooked.

2. No, I am not now, nor have I ever been, a writer. At that point in time, I was a computer programmer.

I hope this information is useful to you!

Summer Solstice 1988

From: (Anonymous)
I binge read Agent of Change on Summer Solstice 1988 on a rocky outcropping in Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet in Alaska that my sister and I had dubbed "Dragon Stones". I had fallen in love with the book cover, Edger drew me in and made me pull the book off the shelf. After skimming the first few pages I horded it for a special day off and good read. I added it to my pack and after hiking to my rock strewn cove I started reading around noon and finished in time to light my Solstice bonfire and watch the tide turn with a pod of Beluga whales that seemed fascinated by the fire built out on a bolder in the quickly filling cove. They circled, clicked and squeaked and swam around it, circling the fire on the rock as the water rose and raced following the moon across the sky. A few of the Beluga even let me touch them from my perch on a nearby rock. White whales and the Clutch. !t was perfect day!

Yes I write, but I write for fun and my own enjoyment, but other than a few magazine sales decades ago, it is not something I have tried to share. Occasionally I love my sentences as much as I do yours, but not often enough to call myself a writer. But I do enjoy it and it is a skill I keep working on.

1. Sometime around 2012. I forgot how I wandered over but it was because someone else on another blog recommended it (Hanneke?) Fledgeling was my first book -- read it in the free version and then the free e-version from Amazon. Very quickly bought all the collections off your Pinbeam site and acquired all your back catalog off Amazon. When I get to jonesing too badly for "the next Liaden book" I have been known to binge-reread the shelf full I already have.

2. English major in college who writes fantasy and scifi for enjoyment. The only thing I have in print is the manual for one of the first home computer word processing programs ever -- 1983-ish. Otherwise not published and not really interested in getting published. --but I know good writing when I read it.

If being a "writer's writer" means your work stands up to the critical eye of those who are knowledgeable about the craft, I, for one, would consider it high praise.

I started with a second edition conflict of honors and then read agent of change. The rest of the books that were out at the time including the first omnibus were a Christmas present from my wife. I have acquired every book since.

I have the first three books as first edition paperbacks bought brand new as they were released. Yes I am an original reader of your work. I have everything since either as dead tree editions or as ebooks. I am slowly acquiring the ones I have as ebooks only in dead tree.

The answer to the second question is no I am not a writer.

I am not a writer. I have however written a lot in my working life. I have written reports, summaries, newsletters, instructions etc. I have no way to describe the moment when I am satisfied with something i have written except that it must balance.

I began reading your novels when I found Fledgling and then searched out everything I could find...including tracking down the authors, in a friendly not stalkerish way.
When I read that Sharon enjoyed Georgette Heyer that made perfect sense to me as I love her books.

1. I picked up the Ace Conflict of Honors in the 90's. I remember picking up the book because of the cover. It's funny how that memory is so clear but finding a good writer is always like finding a treasure. Now I buy eArc, digital AND print. I love your work!

1) Just before Meisha Merlin imploded - I bought some of the books directly from SRM after MM had shipped them to you. I think I started with Conflict of Honors. Pretty sure I have all of them now.
2) Don't write fiction, do write articles relating to my hobby now and used to write technical stuff for my job (long time ago!)
