A syringe lets you easily re-fill an empty cartridge with any colour ink you wish. I used to always make up my own ink colour (a permanent Blue-Black, fwiw), and then use that to refill cartridges. I'd do a bunch all at once, and put a drop of silicon sealant on the end of them after filling. Worked a treat.
