Yesterday, I bought a hummingbird feeder. The hummer discovered it within the first thirty-five seconds of it being hung, seemed like, and came back several times to imbibe. He then departed, and of course I haven't seen him today at all.

Also among yesterday's purchases was a sock for to hold the niger seed what the finches eat. And lo! there were finches all over that sock within an hour of its being filled and hung, though there was still plenty of seed left by the time darkness fell.

This morning, we discover that Mama Coon stopped by for a visit last night after we went to bed, and helpfully chewed a hole in the bottom of the sock. Thistle seed all over the deck, and I hope some fell inside Mama's ears and they itched all day.

Among today's purchases a plastic finch-feeding tube, which has been covered with finches all afternoon.

EDITED TO ADD: When we came home from said errands, there were Ants. In the medicine cabinet of all places, idiot vermin. I really hadn't planned on cleaning out the medicine cabinet today.

The inside critters are stretched out in various poses of catly nonchalance, Ignoring the fact that we're packing. I wish I could do the same. Have I mentioned here -- surely not! -- that I hate to pack?

Sigh...

We had to give up on thistle bags for similar reasons -- squirrel holes. And they don't even like the stuff.

I'll be at BEA on Friday. Be sure to take time to go about the exhibition hall, and collect freebies. Canvas tote bags, pens, pencils, letter openers, stuffed animals, notebooks, books... It is easy to get more than you can carry, so there is a convenient UPS location outside the hall.

Squirrels forced us to switch to a niger seed feeder made of wire mesh. All the various finches, nuthatches and chickadees seem quite happy with it, and the squirrels haven't managed to take it out. Our biggest bird feeder problem now is the immense skunk that has taken to grazing on the seed the birds toss onto the ground.

I've had squirrels destroy multiple feeders--forget ceramic, and I won't buy columns unless they have metal around the openings, because the squirrels will total them.

I even threatened to go after a squirrel with a .357 once. A friend gently pointed out that would take out the squirrel, the feeder, the tree, and possibly the neighbor's east wall. I read extensively on ballistics the rest of the week.

I've even seen raccoons learn how to operate a hylarious feeder....

You should be at the convention by now. Hope it's going well, and that good business and freebies galore are a part of it!
