Chivalry is Not Dead
Thursday, August 18th, 2005 11:41 amAs reported elsewhere, I took Argent in for a safety check at oh-god-early this morning. I had, of course, fortified myself with a book -- Courtesans by Katie Hickman, which has been sitting on my TBR pile Forever. Mind you, I had fully expected that the television set would be on in the waiting room, blaring out Infinite Reruns of Hogan's Heroes and Leave it to Beaver, but figured it was a nice enough day that I could read outside, assuming enough shade to hide me from the sun.
My appointment, as above, was early; indeed, I was the first customer in the place, and so had the waiting room, with the television in off mode, to myself. Happily, I turned on the light, chose a chair and settled into my book. About, I guess, a half-an-hour later, the second customer of the day arrived, gave his car into Mike's tender keeping, and wandered into the waiting room. He made a bee-line for the television, then turned his head and looked at me, sitting there with my book in my lap.
"Reading," he said, sounding surprised, but not disapproving. And then he turned around and left the waiting room, leaving the television blessedly off.
I am impressed.

Date: 2005-08-18 09:13 am (UTC)I'd be ecstatic if that's what played in my dealership's waiting room. I usually see daytime talk shows, which really do inspire the urge to self-injure.

Date: 2005-08-18 10:13 am (UTC)I get the daytime talk shows in hospital waiting rooms (also, at the only ice cream store open in the winter in this here little section of Vacationland) -- which you really have to wonder about. Wouldn't you think they'd show things that would make people feel better? All Road Runner, All the Time, or something equally uplifting?

Date: 2005-08-18 10:18 am (UTC)They'd never get folks out of the waiting room...including the dealership staff, mechanics, people from surrounding businesses...
You couldn't get me in at OMG Early
