...there are, like, a million yellowjackets crowding the birdfeeder. I'm talking a serious air traffic control nightmare, here. The chickadees can't get near the place.
Well, I'm not terribly fond of them, myself, and the only thing they ever did to me was build a nest in the fuse box. Happily, we found this out in Deep Winter, when they were all vewy, vewy sleepy. We slurped them out with the shop vac and callously put them outside to freeze.
Chewing through the living room ceiling, though -- yikes! Superbugs!
They got into the attic, chewed into the insulation and made a HUGE nest, then continued chewing on through the plasterboard in the ceiling. I had to call an exterminator - the bug bomb I set off in the attic didn't even faze them.
No need. I'm normally an organic type - no chemical fertilizers, organic pest control, green power, yadda yadda yadda. The yellowjackets earned an exception to the standard policy - I had the whole house sprayed this spring, chemical death in every nook and cranny where those little bastards might creep in. It was quite effective - for the first time ever, there were no nests to knock down from under the eaves. Mwhahahahahahahah!
Yellowjackets definitely earn an exception to the live-and-let-live philosophy. The really nice thing about yellowjacket traps is that they are are 100% organic, no chemicals. They go in after the pop (I suggest orange), and they just can't get back out. Hang them out in mid-august and bye-bye invaders.
They do only work in late summer/autumn then their matabolism makes them crave sugar.

Not a yellowjacket fan, here *g*
