Oooookay, you erudite peoples, you.

I'm looking for a word. The word is slightly derogatory; it means roughly, "not from around here" or "flatlander". The word begins with an S. I don't know what language it's part of, or if it's cant or creole. It's something like sachenaw. I can almost hear it.

I hate when this happens.

Abundant Spanish Aunts.

Possibly "Sassenach" -- which is, I believe, Scots

(Which doesn't really mean that, but might have that connotation)

sassenach?

Many times when you know part of the word you can use the "wild card" feature of the American Heritage Dictionary to search for words that have that bit in them.

I didn't know that.

*files away for future reference*

Thanks!

Both Elizabeth Moon and the indomnable Anne Mac both used the word. Gran Dame McCaffrey used it in her Power series and Ms Moon in her book about the woman who survived suspended animation three times for 50+ years.
Having said all that, I still have not remembered the word. Good Luck
