Mixed Morning

Bright and sunny; I think we've finally hit positive Fahrenheit. The dishes are done, the laundry's begun, the morning email has delivered smiles and fury.

First, from Neyjour, a portrait of Shan. Quite nice, actually, though I'm thinking from that expression somebody's about to have a Bad Day.

Also awaiting my attention, the New York Times headline edition, always so full of potential. Today's most infuriating story referenced the State of the Union set-up speech, in which George W. Bush asserts of Iraq, "I firmly planted the flag of liberty." Interesting if true, I suppose. But what pushed my buttons (recovering reporter warning) was:

"White House officials said that planning for the news conference began on Monday and that it was essentially Mr. Bush's idea. Although the president typically dislikes news conferences, White House officials also say he is closely involved in setting strategy in dealing with the news media and understands when it is in his interest to use his powerful podium to try to shape public perception of the news."

And, just in case I wasn't pissed enough -- though I admit I did this one to myself; I didn't have to go to CNN this morning -- there's this

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's new education secretary denounced PBS on Tuesday for spending public money on a cartoon with lesbian characters, saying many parents would not want children exposed to such lifestyles.

The not-yet-aired episode of "Postcards From Buster" shows the title character, an animated bunny named Buster, on a trip to Vermont -- a state known for recognizing same-sex civil unions. The episode features two lesbian couples, although the focus is on farm life and maple sugaring."

Back to email, Kali Lightfoot sends the following much-needed bit of irreverence:

The wise old Mother Superior was dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her comfortable.

They gave her some warm milk to drink, but she refused it. Then one nun took the glass back to the kitchen.

Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.

Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother drank a little, then a little more.

Before they knew it, she drank the whole glass down to the last drop. "Mother," the nuns asked with earnest, "Please give us some wisdom before you die,"

Barely audible and with a serene look on her face she said, "Don't sell that cow."

And on that note...
