Of Tim's Potatoes, Desks, and Projects to Fill One's Time
Saturday, May 30th, 2009 01:50 pmSteve kindly agreed to accompany me this morning to Evelyn's Used Furniture Barn in Beautiful Downtown Skowhegan, Maine. He suggested that we breakfast at the Tim Horton's also situated in Skowhegan, not three blocks from Evelyn's.
We got the breakfast sandwich on biscuit, always a favorite, but forbore from the so-called "breakfast potatoes" which are really just...well, dreadful. This morning, we voiced our complaints to the franchise owner, who happened to be on the counter and heard us debating our breakfast choices. Tim Horton's Corporate really, really needs to reformulate the product, or get outta the "breakfast potato" bidness.
After breakfast, we went to Evelyn's and had lots of fun poking around the barn. Found a butcher-block kitchen table that might have done the trick, but -- it was being held for someone else. My luck. We even went over to the store and looked at the new furniture, including a dining room table that might have done, but in the end left empty-handed.
We wandered back to Waterville by way of Norridgewock, and went to Marden's (aka "I shoulda bought it when I saw it at Marden's"), the local buyer of odd, damaged and oddly damaged lots. And there I found a brown-and-black solid wood dining room table which may have seen kinder days but had certainly seen worse ones. The finish is dinged along one edge, and there was a gap where the two halves should have folded together neatly.
With the assistance of a really helpful floor person, we got the butterfly leaf deployed -- but that didn't solve the problem of the gap, as I had hoped it would. In fact, having the leaf in position made the gap worse. That didn't make any sense, so our kindly helper went off in search of a rubber mallet, returning with this dread instrument of destruction and a co-worker. The co-worker was able fold under the table, and push the butterfly leaf into position while Steve and I pushed like foolish things, and SNAP the leaf went into place with scarcely a seam showing, and was duly locked.
Yep, I bought it. We do need to transport it from Marden's to the house -- hoping a friend's son, who has a truck, can help us out with that, and with getting the old desk outta here. But! Progress has been made.
Glowing with satisfaction, we returned home where Steve made us some Absolutely Wonderful(TM) stir fry for lunch.
And now?
I'm reporting to the corner of the couch in order to get some Serious Writing Done.
