Chilly

That is not a complaint.

Did some needful SRM chores, read a couple pages of Poison Study. Refrigerator soup for lunch, then did dishes and finished up the last of the Epic Pile of Laundry. In the meantime, of course, we've been working on assembling another, less epic pile of laundry...

It was a beautiful day for a walk, so I did that while [personal profile] kinzel did some yard work. The walk also helped me work through the next bit on the story, wherein Character A needs to tell Character B something, but not too much, so that there will be a Clue in place when it's need, a couple thousand words down the line.

All in all, a relaxing day. And hoping for another, tomorrow.

I just read Poison Study. How are you liking it?

I'm only about 115 pages in. It's not blowing me away, but I haven't thrown it against the wall, either. One thing that really did bother me was a Wrong Word -- protege for prodigy -- I can't imagine how the copy editor let that one get by...

I see an increasing number of those. One that sticks in my mind was flaunt used instead of flout in ElizaBeth Gilligan's first book. The sheer number of mistakes did make me want to toss it against the wall. (The situation is exacerbated by the fact that I used to be a copy editor.)

Sad commentary on the publishing world?

I enjoyed Poison Study, but in that light fluffy "Well, that was fun" way. Mongo prefer to read Liad books again.

Not that I have anything to do with the publishing industry, but I wonder if the advent of spell checkers has something to do with it. The problem is, spell check only looks for words that are misspelled not for words that are misused. Or perhaps it is just ignorance on the part of the copy editors.

I wonder which would be less depressing to think about, long-term? ;)

I downloaded Poison Study from the library to my Palm, and failed to get into it sufficiently to read it before it expired (damned DRM.) I was wondering if it was because of trying to read on the palm (though I have read other novels) or the book itself. I may try again with a hard copy.

Hey, you want mine? :)

...and having now finished reading Poison Study... I think it irritating and over-praised. It is, however, a first novel, so there's a pretty good chance that matters will improve as the author gets more practice.
