Clarifications and Requests

Caution: Contains Candid, Nekkid Shots of the Sordid Underside of Publishing. Not for the faint of heart.

Several folks have asked after the best venue for buying Lee and Miller books in These Uncertain Times(tm).

As we are ...unlikely... to ever see royalties from bookstore sales of Meisha Merlin books, and since we have this Big Pile of Books in the basement, we'd ask that folks please consider buying from us first. If you want the money from your purchase to support and encourage the authors, this is the Numero Uno Very Best Way to be sure this happens.

Next best venues are the independent bookstores*. While money spent there will, as above, likely not trickle down to the authors, you will be benefiting and supporting the store -- which is A Good Thing.

Note: The above is relevant to Meisha Merlin editions ONLY. By all means feel free to purchase electronic copies via Baen Webscriptions and mass market editions from Ace.

*Independent Bookstores we know and love:

Uncle Hugo's
University Bookstore
Pandemonium Books
Missing Volume
Borderlands
Dream Haven
Flights of Fantasy
All of the above folks do mail order and take want lists

fix the "from us" link

It has a " mark at the end of it.

All fix, now. Thanks!

I'm house hunting for something just that beautiful! Where is it?

There are quite a few places like that in KC, MO -- I love the old sections of town.

Mine is in Aurora, IL. The community is vibrant, and we have lived here 18 years. Lots of houses like this -- the one next to us sold for aroung 135K (not in good shape) a year or so ago.

But 40% low income 60% Hispanic may be a problem for some. The public schools did not do well by my kids although some kids have flourished. We believed strongly that that was what we wanted. I might still choose to live here but send my kids to private school if I had it to do over again.

check zip 60505 for houses over 50 years old -- lots of cool stuff out there

Argh. I happen to be working at Pandemonium this evening, so I got to talk to Steve. Which was lovely, though the circumstances were somewhat less than. Um...*hugs*

Thanks, Julia.

I take it this is in reference to the 'bad thing' of previous note? All sympathies flowing toward you. Damn.

In fact, this would be very intimately attached to the Bad Thing.

All sympathies flowing toward you.

Thanks, Di.

That is a very bad bad thing indeed. Sympathies. That really sucks.

If we order a book, will you autograph it? :)

(Well, it's too late, I ordered one anyway. :)

One of my personal favorites in the Independent Bookstore cosmos is The Other Change of Hobbit in Berkeley. They also do mail order.

Well, I took the opportunity to wander through your site and pick up one or two things I didn't yet have. Mmmm, books. :>

I'm *so* sorry to hear that. When I was at Worldcon in Anaheim I spoke to an author who said Very Bad Things about Meisha Merlin. Apparently they'd promised to reissue her books and kept stringing her along for *years*.

I was surprised because they'd done all your books and I recalled you were happy with them. So apparently they're Not Nice? And I should never buy any MM books unless it's directly from the author or are they just screwing you over?

I'll check your site for birthday presents.

Not quite. MM is basically bankrupt. There won't *be* more MM books.

We were very happy with them. Meisha Merlin brought us back from the dead, and we owe them a lot.

And I should never buy any MM books unless it's directly from the author or are they just screwing you over?

Well...as far as I understand the situation, any Meisha Merlin books you buy from a bookstore will benefit ...the distributor. Who are, I'm sure, very nice people, but there are others on my charity list before them.

I'll check your site for birthday presents.

Books make super birthday presents!

Which of your books would you recommend giving as a birthday to someone who has never been exposed to your stories?

Re: MM

[identity profile] paw3pals.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I would recommend Conflict of Honors. Or the other choice is Agent of Change, which has turtles. But beware, then they will want to immediately read the sequels, which of course they would know you have, and how could you say no to them borrowing your copies? After all, you gave them the first one.

Of course. Where it all began. Thanks for the reminder.
