Have you suggested the Susan Cooper series? (Over Sea, Under Stone)
Have they been done as graphic novels? (Serious question) The kid in question Doesn't Do Reading unless it's in graphic novel form (a breakthrough, as he used to Just Not Read at all). Also, he doesn't read stories about girls.
