Just when you thought you could relax a little...

I had honestly thought this was a dead issue. Silly me.

(CNN) -- Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says there are no plans for a federal database of drivers' information.

The act, signed in 2005 as part of an emergency military spending and tsunami relief bill, aims to weave driver's licenses and state ID cards into a sort of national identification system by May 2008. The law sets baseline criteria for how driver's licenses will be issued and what information they must contain.

The Department of Homeland Security insists Real ID is an essential weapon in the war on terror, but privacy and civil liberties watchdogs are calling the initiative an overly intrusive measure that smacks of Big Brother.

The rest of the story, in glorious doublespeak.

Office packed. Again. Will report to updated quarters bright and sunshine early on Monday and unpack same. Again. What fun.

The nifty word meter over at zokutou.co.uk has gone missing, which is really too bad. This does not, however, mean that we here at the Confusion Factory have stopped writing. Or counting.

edited to add new meter

Progress on Duainfey:

Today's Special:

They passed the last homestead at mid-morning; the road thinning to a thred of dusty track through country overgrown with sparse, leggy shrubbery.
Becca recognized redthorn and thessel, wild carrot, coinflower, and bluebows. Fire plants, the lot of them, their only virtue that of quick growth and quicker die-off, to enrich the ground so that sturdier, more useful plants might re-grow.

Remember the catchphrase, right after 9/11? "If we do [thus-and-so], the terrorist will have won"?

Really, now. What makes us think, just because we're citizens, that we have any rights or freedoms in our own country? How naive!

At the top of the page (I checked too) it says

Apologies to you all for the site being down for over a week. It was brought down at the worst possible time, though we're not sure if it was malicious attack, or just someone being over-enthusiastic. We love that you all find our little site useful, and we hope we can keep it going as long as possible. Keep writing!

So it sounds as if it was down for a while, but is back now?

Here it is, although I'm not sure about the formatting:

Well...That message has been up for ...maybe five months? I don't know what y'all are doing that I'm not, but -- It's Not There, insofar as any of the browsers on The Particular Computer are concerned.

Weird...

[identity profile] mbarker.livejournal.com 2007-08-17 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, well. Messages like that need date-time stamps.

Wonder if your ISP and theirs are arguing. The SPAM blacklists sometimes create problems like this, because ISPs decide to block traffic from people on them.

Huh. Works fine for me.

Tried clearing your cache or resetting your cookies or something?...

Did everything I know to do. Unless there's a problem with the ISP going to a long-cache (not impossible), it's Just Not There for me.

I worked in a place that moved us so often that I averaged 7 moves in 7 years ... and some moved more often. I always figured it was their strategy to keep the mess in cubicles down. Too many paperful desks? Move them!

And if their database makes a mistake, will there a process to easily correct inaccuracies? Yes, that is a trick question.

[identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com 2007-08-17 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Certainly there would never be an error in the database; those sorts of things just don't happen...

[identity profile] serge-lj.livejournal.com 2007-08-17 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
And if there is an error in the database and if you point it out, then you're enabling the terrorists, you traitor, and Guantanamo is too good for you!

California law enforcement agencies have been notifying the State DMV of errors and asking for corrections for years; the response? We (DMV) are a fee gathering agency, not a law enforcement agency, so our data does not need to be 100% correct and we don't have the personnel/funding/equipment to make corrections.

However, it a a violation of state laws for anyone to access DMV records without a valid law enforcement reason or without paying a fee. Basically, the whole issue is a mess.
