Methinks others have explicated the problem. You can verifiy whether you have a common or garden SD or a high faluting SDHC by looking at the card. SDHC one will have a logo like this one (http://www.photographyblog.com/index.php/weblog/comments/transcend_16gb_sdhc_card/).

PPS Although I have a (2Gb) flash card that can be shared between the eee and my big computer I also find USB flash drives work well. It depends what you are trying to copy but a 128MB or 256MB usb stick is enough for almost all the stuff I need to share.
