Oh no! We were good friends and con buddies back in the early days, lost contact after I moved away and rahter conclusively gafiated--this is really sad news. She was a warm and wonderful person, and lord the girl could write.
Thank you for the news, as sad as it is. Hellspark has been a favorite of mine since the first edition (with its glorious page-long-typo) came out. I have given away more copies of Hellspark than any other book besides Conflict of Honors.
I'm certain that, in whatever glory it is that authors arrive in The Next Place, that Ms. Kagan will be received in the Light.
I remember back in 2003, after I first discovered the book through Alexlit, I wrote her asking if there would be a sequel. In her reply, she said,
Maggie stays cool even if I never write a sequel. (Sad to say, I'm the flighty sort and after a book's worth I'm usually off to a new universe.) Maggie was a favorite nine-year-old friend of mine back when I wrote that book. The hug was a real one and I can feel it still and I treasure it still...however big the kid's grown and however adult she is now <huge grin>!
The problem may be that the card reader in your HP cannot handle the 4GB card.Older SD card readers and assorted other devices will not work with SD cards over 2GB.
I'm sorry for your loss. And for the loss of more books.
I had not read it until you offered it as a snatched-up special, rescued from the ruins.
And now it's on my "you _must_ read this book, but if you do not return my copy to me, I shall hunt you down and place the curse of the book thief upon you" list.

I enjoyed Hellspark so much that I purchased a copy of Uhura's Song as well. She will be missed.

I discovered Hellspark through your mentions of it, and loved it. I'm another one who would have loved another work in that universe.

She was one of the few SF writers who got her biology right.
