This statement makes me feel physically ill. It reads like a defense of rape - of any rape - as a way of personal growth. As in ... Mercy was too strong. She was too self-reliant. She needed to be taught her place in the grand scheme of things. ...

I disagree totally. She was already coming to realise how much she trusts Adam when things get rough. There was definite progress in their relationship, especially with Samuel acknowledging that he was out of the running.
