Tis the season

I've written the Yule letter and dug out the cards. Goodness, we went slightly berserk at the museum store sale last year, didn't we? Ten boxes of cards? And the odd-lot from Yuletides Past. Well. That'll keep us in business for a year or two.

Steve is on the road with another hundred Eidolon to mail, then off to the grocery story, and the cat supply shop, brave man. I'm going to have to go to a grocery store again someday. I bet it's something to see. In the meantime, I'm on Laundry Detail, between the Yule letter, the cards, and, after bringing y'all up to speed, Fledgling.

Despite the general level of busyness in the house, some trappings of the season are appearing. Steve has put up lights outside, along with the plastic Sandy Claus that fell to us when Steve's mom broke up the Christmas decoration holdings at the big house. Sandy is encsased in a net-work of twinkle lights and looks very fetching. The spruce tree we raised from a seedling is proudly wearing a couple strings of blue lights, and the rhododendron bush is splendid in multicolored mesh. Really, it puts our neighbors' formal festival of light to shame.

Inside, we have a live spruce tree standing in its pot of dirt in the living room. The cats wander by from time and time and try to figure out why it's there, then go away to nap on the matter. Maybe a little later, I'll go downstairs and try to find a string of lights with which to sanctify the branches. That should enlighten the cats: Oh, it's a lamp.

Looking around my office, I see that the current project is nearing an end: I have no uncluttered flat surface; the floor is a dangerous scramble of papers, catalogs, reference books, teddy bears -- and ten boxes of seasonal cards. As soon as I finish with this revision, I'm cleaning this room, s'welp me. Get everything nice and tidy so I can start destroying it again with the Saltation rewrites.

I wonder if the room ever gets tired of this cycle, or considers it part of the natural order, like snow in December and ice storms in May.

Speaking of ice storms, we were extremely lucky here in Central Maine. This time, the worst of the storm stayed to the south of us. Excepting two small giggles, the electricity stayed on, we lost no trees or large branches on our little street, and no one slid into the ditch. Win-win-win.

..and there's the bell from the dryer, my cue to get to work, and then to get to work.

Be warm, everybody.

I'm glad to see you didn't lose power. I've been watching the news and wondering if you were included in that huge group of people sitting in the cold and dark.

My yule letter is only half done, and needs to be finished today. I got most of the cards addressed while I was at Mom's at Thanksgiving (although that was primarily sticking on labels I made earlier)

Here in eastern Kansas, we've got highs in the 50s today, with strong winds from the south. They expect a high of 61 tomorrow before the cold front comes through and plunges us into a high of 16 for Monday.

And then you put the ornaments on and they re-evaluate "Oh looky!! a Giant Cat Toy!"

When I read the description, my first thought was, "a pot of dirt and cats... hmmm..."

But perhaps the Cat Factory residents are more civilized than the average moggin.

My copy of Eidolon arrived Friday to Elkridge, MD.

Thanks ... what a great way it was to spend a Saturday morning.
