The more things change

This so encapsulates my childhood. My father's idea of a dad-daughter bonding was to take me to a war flick.

We have a dumb joke with my Dad - what's on tonight? World War II again. Who's going to win this time?

My dad and I bonded over war flicks and cooking shows.

For my 7th birthday, my dad was supposed to take me downtown, where we were to have a nice little father/daughter lunch at the fancy restaurant in the fancy downtown department store (those of you who have seen _A Christmas Story_ have seen the store - it was where Ralphie's visit to Santa was filmed), and then we were going to see _The Sound of Music_, which had just been released and was showing in the fancy downtown movie theater.*

Instead, we ate at Sliman's (then and now, the best corned beef in Cleveland) and saw _Von Ryan's Express_.

*That downtown Cleveland still had fancy department stores and fancy movie theaters would tell you how long ago this was even if I hadn't mentioned the name of the movie.
