Polluting the minds of the innocent

I came in to the office early today. No, I don't have that much work to do, but! Today is New Students and Their Parents Sweet Day of Parting, and every single parking lot on campus, with the exception of the lot I usually park in, is reserved for guests. Since the single lot open to employees no way holds the vehicles of all the employees -- even all those employees who are bothering to come to work yet -- the better part of valor suggested a take-away breakfast from Tim Horton's and an early arrival. This turned out to be a good call. While the other parking lots have nice "reserved" signs on them, the employee parking lot has no "reserved for staff" sign on it and was filling up nicely with the vehicles of guests by the time I pulled in, at 7:20.

But! I was going to tell you about my work among the savage.

I got out of the car at Tim's and was walking toward the door, when a voice called out, "Binjali!"

I turned, and a guy who was getting into his car, coffee cup in hand, jerked his head toward my car. "Binjali," he said, "what's that mean?"

"It means finestkind," I told him.

"Oh," he said. "Thanks."

I was at dinner last night, and overhead a young man refer to something as binjali! I went over and said "Lee and Miller?" to which he replied "Fledgling!" to which I replied "Live Journal?" to which he replied, "Lurker only." Then we smiled at each other and went our separate ways. My husband said I had the look of someone discovering a long lost friend. I told him it was my first face-to-face episode of fandom (I've never attended a convention) and I just felt warmed through. Was going to send you an email, but this post was to serendipitous to pass up.

It's really, really cool to meet somebody who has the same set of Secret Knowledge that you have, isn't it?

I got on the bus this morning and what do I see but I swear a woman whose complexion looked EXACTLY the way you have described Liadens - very rich and golden. I spoke with her and she said she was from Peru. (really gorgeous woman.)

OOH! I'd only heard "finestkind" in the MASH books, and I didn't know it was living language. Thank you.

It's not in as wide a usage as, say "wicked," but people do use it. W.C. Heinz/Richard Hooker, and Hawkeye were from Maine, after all...

M*A*S*H books

Wow - someone else who's actually READ the MASH books! I thought I had the only copies still in existance (though they're packed away at the moment).

My local Big Box Retailer did not have Longeye on the shelf. Weeks & weeks I'd go back - it never came it. /sigh

Inspired by your other post about orderings, etc, I finally accosted one of the (Helpful!) sales droids, and TaDa, a mere 4.5 days later, I now have it! /bwaahhahahah

So, repeat for those of us who refuse to learn /search, when do we pester them re: Fledgling?

Thxbai
Murgy

Pestering can wait ....

Seems to us ... the best thing to do is to gently inquire of the store's crew where you may Fledgling if it is not in the "new and notorious" or equivalent section fairly soon, with fairly soon being sometime on or after the original "release date" of September 8th. I note that bn.com has been intermittently reporting Fledgling as available and amazon.com reports tell somethat Fledgling will be shipping on September 5th -- I that's guess so that Fledgling will arrive on the 8th.

Besides that ... do *tell us* when you see a book in the store. Yessir, tell us when and where.

Books-a-Million online says it's in stock; but then they also have the paperback edition available to order, with the comment:
"This title will ship on February 23, 2010."
I wish my world were that precise!
