Working Weekend

Labor Day Weekend here at the Lee-Miller Cat Emporium will be a working weekend. Steve is getting Misfits in shape to go to the printer and crunching around the Korval site (not to be confused with the SRM Publisher site, which will be up and accepting orders all weekend, ahem), trying to bring the look-and-feel into something more, oh, 2009.

I will be going through Saltation, with a view of getting it off my desk and back to Toni on Monday evening, latest.

We're still looking for reviews and for reports of Fledgling sighted in the wild.

So, what're y'all doing this weekend that's fun and interesting?

This morning, taken the car in to get the MOT[1] and also have the rear wiper motor replaced, which meant that I had to wait at the dealer (which is of course several miles out of town) while it was done. So I took along a couple of books (you may have heard of them, called 'Barnburner' and 'Gunshy') and almost finished them both while waiting (one page off the end of the latter when he came to tell me the car was ready). And now I want to go and live in Maine, and I keep saying 'ayuh' a lot, and I'm wishing there were more to the series but the author keeps doing other things instead of writing *g*...

[1] UK "Ministry Of Transport" safety verification test, compulsory every year for vehicles over 3 years old. It passed with no trouble (OK, last weekend I did have new tyres all round, costing almost GBP 500; worth it though, the old ones were getting very close to non-legal and starting to feel sloppy on corners, and these ones should last a couple of years).

Oooh! This week I read Barnburner and am halfway through Gunshy, too. I keep laughing over how awfully primative (by comparison) being a computer nerd was in those days. Dial-up...shudder!

But I also went to an Art & Craft Fair in the woods, saw a movie (District 9), and started watching volume 4 of Heroes. Tomorrow, a long walk at the zoo, then a cook out for dinner. Monday another movie, another walk and dinner at Claim Jumpers. And for good measure, another day of vacation Tuesday, just because! Now I'm off to download some of those free Kindle adventure stories that Steve mentioned.

I remember it all too well, including the dilemma of whether to pay out for a new Pentium board (and whether it was actually compatible, and even whether it would actually do basic arithmetic correctly) or stick with the reliable 486. I didn't have "always on" broadband until 2001 when the cable company finally made it to my area.

(And I still often slip by a factor of a thousand -- or actually 1024 -- in the sizes of memory and disk, and say that I want an extra megabyte or two of RAM, because those are the figures which sound 'big' to me.)

So, what're y'all doing this weekend that's fun and interesting?

Grocery shopping. Massage. Writing. Yardwork. Some of it is fun, and some of it is interesting, and sometimes we even achieve overlap.

My wonderful activity for this Labor Day weekend is getting to read FLEDGLING. I just got back from my local Barnes & Noble where I picked up my copy. They sent me an email last night telling me the copy I had reserved was in so you can bet I hied myself over there first thing this morning. I will check back with them next week and if all the copies are sold, I will ask them to restock it! Of course I've also ordered a signed copy but who could wait patiently until that one comes to read it...not me! Patience is NOT a virtue when it comes to the Liaden Universe and new additions thereto.

With any luck, the VW bug that we've had in our driveway will find a new home today, with someone who has the resources to devote to it.

Driving down to Portland (Oregon for those on the eastern side of the country) to catch the last Kane concert and Leverage wrap party with the family & friends.

While there the plan is to hang out for several hours at Powells Books.

I'll check to see if they have Fledgeling in stock there (pretty sure they will).

Just back from the farmer's market with copious quantities of goodies.

The new computer arrived yesterday so I will spend the weekend migrating the old to the new. Tomorrow dim sum and a movie.

Thus far, we have breakfasted at our favorite little diner, made the last payment of G's b-day present, picked a case for said present, had my hair cut, picked up drugs from the pharmacy and had lunch.

Later, the plan is to visit the NY 400, which is some sort of reenacted historic village based on the dutch settlement of NY 400 years ago; Play miniature golf (the second game in a series of 5) and a Fireman's Muster in West Hempstead.

Minn-StF Meeting today, work tomorrow 7am-7pm, off on Monday, nothing planned. Maybe cooking - if I can find something to store it in, I'm supposed to be making a big batch of tabbouleh.

Have you heard anything about when you'll be getting the copies of Fledgling to sign & ship?

Had a great Wine Tasting last night, a decent Author Tea today (she writes thrillers), books were sold, new friends were made, regulars were saluted and celebrated (off to college, to a new job), the weekend is GOOD. Sunday will be book-keeping while waiting for the Sunday irregulars to stop by.

Monday will be sailing with Bridget and Beth in Annapolis provided the weather cooperates...

I shall be reading my "just delivered from Amazon" copy of Fledgling.
And I know I shall have a good time.

It's actually a whole lot of fun! It makes people smile as you go by , even more than my regular bike does.

I saw Fledgling for sale at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Ellicott City, Maryland

I went to one of my local Barnes & Noble stores to be sure they had in fact gotten in copies of FLEDGLING as promised. Yep, they were there but turned end on so they were hard to notice unless you were specifically looking for them. Soooo...I did a bit of "reshelving" and rearranged the books so they were face out and very visible. Luckily they were at eyelevel already so now they're in the best position they can be. I'll check back in a few days to see if those copies are gone and if they are, I'll ask that they reorder. It's a small thing but if we all do a bit of hand selling it couldn't hurt.
