Today is the Official! Release! Day! for Fledgling

What can you do to celebrate Theo's flight from web serial to hardcover?

I'm glad you asked.

Cake and ice cream are, of course, always in order. Ticker tape parades are also appropriate, but hard to coordinate.

You might also do the following:

1. Visit your favorite brick-n-mortar store to congratulate Fledgling in person, where it sits on the shelf.

1a. If Fledgling is not on the shelf, politely ask a friendly bookstore staffer when it will be available.

1b. If they say, "It hasn't been ordered in," "Never," or other variations on the theme, politely ask them to order it.

1c. In all cases, thank them for their time. Yes, they work in a bookstore, which is a very cool job, but still, some days one 'thank you' goes a long, long way.

More ways to celebrate!

2. Introduce Theo to a friend or co-worker.

3. If you have Fledgling in-hand, read it!

4. If you've already read it, blog it, or post a review on Amazon.com, bn.com, LibraryThing or the social networking site of your choice.

5. Ice cream and cake!

I hung the SFRevu review review of Fledgling on my office door, next to an image of the book cover.

What are you doing to celebrate Release Day?

Reading it (again). Added it to my librarything collection. Pondering getting a hardcopy version.

Offering burnt sacrifices to the Postal Gods so that they don't do their usual reroute of eagerly awaited pieces of mail to Antarctica and then the Gobi Desert!
And trying to resist the urge to visit the PO box more than once a day.

Congratulating FLEDGLING

I anticipated the subject of this entry (before it was even posted) in a comment I made for the previous entry but it bears repeating. When you go to the local books and mortar store(s), if FLEDGLING is shelved with the spine out and thus not as visible as one would like. take a moment to shift the books next to it so that FLEDGLING is the one displayed face out, with its dust jacket art very visible and easier for avid buyers to find! A small secret guerilla marketing move but hey, couldn't hurt!

Actually, it can hurt, because it can really annoy the staff who have to go round and put it all back the way their manager or store policy wants it. I've heard a lot of complaints from bookstore staff about customers who rearrange things so that their favourites get better displays, if everyone did it then nothing would ever be in its place. See this post (http://seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com/145040.html) (from an author who also has a new book out):

DON'T rearrange bookstore displays. If the staff of my local bookstore is constantly being forced to deal with fixing the shelves after someone "helpfully" rearranged things to give their chosen favorites a better position, they're unlikely to feel well inclined toward that book—or author. It's not a good thing to piss off the bookstores. Let's just not.

(Amazon UK still has it as "not yet released". We'll see when they actually get it...)

This is exciting news.

Since the project started out being funded by audience donations, consider echoing this over on [livejournal.com profile] crowdfunding too.

(second try, lj being funky)

saw it last night a the Barnes and Nobel at Clackamas Town Center, Clackamas Oregon.

It was on the bottom shelf of the new SF hardback and not easy to see.

When I was stationed in England, and subject to the whims of the APO network, one of my inbound letters took the scenic route - by way of the American Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan.

My copy of Fledgling was just delievered today from AMAZON. So, very shortly, I shall be 'sitting myself down' and 'start reading.'

I shall stalk my local postal delivery person daily and twist the arm of my local librarian/selector to order copies for each branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library! [which isn't too hard as she is a coworker :-)]

Salt Lake City gave us a very fine welcome when we were Guests of Honor at ConDuit a few years back -- we had a good turnout at the main branch of the library for our pre-con talk... so yes, that's a good spot!

The military post misinterpreted a "1" as a "6" in the zip code. Very strange. When I finally received it, I saw that the "1" in question was a straight line with no ornamentation - totally sans serif. Silly postman tricks.

Yes it is out -- Congratulations to all!! I just finished my new copy from Amazon -- nice fast delivery for reading while awaiting my signed copy. :)

While I haven't (yet) done a chapter by chapter comparison of the draft vs published version, I was very impressed by the polishing and tightening/rewrite done. Just off the top of my head, I liked how you wrapped up the Delgado sideline (at least except for the out-world foreshadowing, likely to be expanded upon in Saltation) and took an idea or so from the draft Saltation to better focus Theo's experiences in her travels. Only noticed one or two typos -- great job!

I don't read/post blogs very often, but would be interested in a blog discussing the Fledgling book -- is there a discussion group? Thanks for keeping things going -- have a great year and many more Liaden stories. :)

Cheers. Regina

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yay! for quick Amazon delivery!

There's group, here: http://community.livejournal.com/liaden_spoilers/profile -- that's specifically for Liaden Universe spoiler discussions.

Just bought a copy from my favourite bookstore, Pulp Fiction in Anzac Arcade Brisbane Queensland Australia. Love these small bookshops. Ron the owner put me on to you guys years ago, saying quietly 'you might like this', and I've never regretted it!
