rolanni: (Marvin's not happy)

And that's enough of that

Spent all day doing bookkeeping, database keeping, checkbook keeping and every kind of keeping except lighthouse keeping, which at this point in the day I might actually want to do.

Having now completed my labors, and achieved a work surface, I can tell you several things of note:

Thing One: There are a scant One Hundred Seven (107) Saltations left for preorder.

Thing Two: There are 38 people that no amount of emailing, phoning, post carding, and shouting from trees have roused. We very much want to send these folks the Fleglings they're due, but it's hard when they've gone and dropped off the earth. I suppose that I'll give the postcards another couple days to hit, and then publish a list of Very Lost Souls to the Fledgling webpage, and the Liaden Universe(R) News List. Can anybody think of something clever that I should be doing instead of or in addition to those things?

Thing Two-Ay: Some people may not be aware that a package refused or returned to sender does not have a free ride back to said sender. If your book comes back and we have to mail it out again, we will be contacting you for extra postage.

Thing Three: ...there was a Thing Three; I'm almost certain of it. Never mind.
Edited to add: I remember! Lookit! We're on the Uncle Hugo's Bestseller List for October! Three times!

Thing Four: Take a look at David Mattingly's latest painting.

Thing Five: The Mixed Metaphor Sale is still going on!

Tomorrow, I note, is Monday.

Nice painting, but even nicer comment at the bottom:)!

WOW!! Fabulous cover.

Also many congratulations on the available space on the table. Mine currently is about a foot deep in miscellaneous piles, all over. Sigh.

There's a space ship on the cover of the book . . .

[identity profile] mbarker.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure, but I think that's GT S14, aka Slipper Fourteen, also known as a glider... a step on the way to space, but not yet a space ship?

[identity profile] jhetley.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But that won't fit the song's meter . . .

[identity profile] keristor.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's a glider on the cover of the book" fits. And then:

There's a girl in the glider on the cover of the book.
There's a jacket on the girl...

Ah! Okay, I'll clap along.

neat! ...but with caveat

Looks exquisite, except for rather prominent engine nacelles (intakes to pull air into jet engine) that frankly have no place on a sailplane. See Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailplane ) for examples of sailplanes (e.g., Glaser-Dirks DG-808) from 20th century in our neck of the woods. Yeah, I know, picky, picky, picky. Never mind, this cover really does look great!

Perhaps the sailplane is designed to get the young pilots familiar with the features of their future crafts? Although deadsticking a space capable craft is likely to be problematic.

Or perhaps the new, revised Saltation has changed the craft?

Or, of course, it'll look good on a bookstand?

There's a reason, I'm sure.

Has anyone else spotted the cat? (David always includes a cat in all his artwork. Playing spot the cat is a fun game :))

Yup, I see it.

Ah! just as I was about to beg for a hint, there it was!

[identity profile] aitchellsee.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
rats! that was me, proving that I'm no candidate for pilot or scholar by not noticing that LJ had logged me out again :-(

[identity profile] keristor.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't see the cat. But then I have problems with non-text visual recognition.

[identity profile] hamsterbook.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just the cat's head?
Do you see the person in the rocks?

Utter kewlness. Love David's comments about Saltation and the Liaden Universe.

David Burroughs Mattingly

I recognize some of his covers -- a couple others make me want to read the book.

took me way to long to find the cat.

I didn't see the cat until I zoomed in. Just have one question, why do we see what appears to be an exhaust port in a glider?

Please remind this lost soul how to pre order Saltation.

Thanks,
