Apparently Amazon.com* is canceling actual, real-world pre-orders of Mouse and Dragon because the book has "sold out."** If this has happened to you, please go here and let us know.

---------
*Yes, the notice does appear to come from an Actual Amazon.com address, though the notice itself isn't exactly written in typical Amazon.com Notice Speak.

**No, I don't know how a book that's not even scheduled to be on the shelf until June 15 can be "sold out" -- at this point in the game, if Amazon had sold Thrilling Numbers of the novel, all they would have to do is contact their distributor with an updated order.

WHAT.

Stoopid corporation tricks indeed. Pah. Maybe I'll just buy my copy from Borderlands.

ARGH! indeed. Just when I think Amazon can't be any more screwed up, they go ahead and outdo their own previous record.

And they appear to still be accepting pre-orders. Very odd.

I have a feeling that cancellation of pre-orders was a side effect of a bigger problem. People on a comic book yahoo group I'm on were all excited that a bunch of out of print and normally rare and very expensive comic collections seemed to be on sale dirt cheap on Amazon. So of course, people flooded orders in. All of those orders since got canceled by Amazon because they didn't actually HAVE them. Actually, I think I heard that some didn't; my impression is that they honored the too-low price as long as they had stock, then canceled the rest.

I'd guess that in fixing their oops, they managed to cancel the pre-orders as well.

Not a pre-order, but I notice that the link to Mouse and Dragon in the "save to buy later" section of my shopping cart now goes to a "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available" page. Saltation is still pre-orderable, so at least it doesn't look like a blanket dropping of Baen as happened to Macmillan a month or two ago.

I just checked Amazon and signed up to be notified when M & D is available. This is the first time I have seen this option. Very Strange.

If you want it as an e-book, I am about to order the June webscription including Mouse and Dragon and Dragon Variation (and also Ryk Spoor's Threshold). If you want the freebie that Baen generously offers, be the first to reply to this comment with an e-mail address that is NOT already in the Webscription database.

I've $10 in my Baen Webscription account, already got Threshold in eArc, having to find floor space to park the stack of Lee & Miller books, hardbound and paper, so Thanks Abigail, I'll just opt for the long awaited Mouse & Dragon eArc when it's available.

I ordered an electronic item at Creative Labs yesterday which will be fulfilled by the evil empire (and badly too, telling me it will take a week to package it and give it to the postal service, bah). Within a couple of hours I got a cancellation notice looking like it was from Amazon, but with a link leading to a .ru domain.

I have no idea if those two events are connected or in any way relate to the M&D issues, but I thought it odd when I read your post that something similar just happened to me.

Guess I'll order my copy from Powell's, then.

I've noticed some phishing-type fake Amazon order-confirmation and order-cancellation notices recently, but those seem to differ from actual Amazon notices in not specifying what has been ordered or canceled. (Mine come to an address I've never used for Amazon, so it's easy to tell they aren't legit.) I don't think this is connected to the M&D issue.

Dragon Variation is also tagged as "notify when available."

I had canceled my preorder with Amazon back at the time of the Macmillan Fail and placed a new one with B&N. That order included several preorders in addition to yours. When I look at it now, Mouse & Dragon, a book I have already received, and one other upcoming book from a professional/textbook publisher are shown as "Cannot be removed." Which is, you know, not a problem since I don't WANT to remove Mouse & Dragon, but it seems a little odd. Other books preordered on the same order - e.g. Moon's Oath of Fealty, which comes out next week, have the option of being canceled.

I'm reading "Oath of Fealty" at the moment, it was delivered to me last week. You mean in the UK we actually get a book first, for once? (It was published March 4th by Orbit in the UK.)

Yeah, I'd heard over at Elizabeth's LJ that copies had been seen in the wild in the UK. You do indeed get that one first.
