Open House: Absent Hostess

Between the day-job, and the landing of galleys, and frivolities like, oh, sleep, I'm going to be scarce in these parts for the next while.

Please feel free to talk among yourselves; I'll be back, umm...

...later.

"the landing of galleys"

That term always makes me think of big boats with rows of oarsmen invading the coasts of Maine. Perhaps a bunch of Vikings who got caught in a time warp for the last thousand years and have only just discovered Vinland...

(Yes, I know that the Viking ones were called knörr, but they were basically the same principle as the Greek galleys (γαλέα), with both sails and oars...)

I wondered idly if there was a connection to the galley slave of yore, but thought I wouldn't shove that oar in here-until I saw your comment. Kitchen duty for both of us, I'm afraid -- which means we'll be slaving in the galley, I suppose.

Hey, that's some nice cheese. Any goodies in the freezer? You kids really need to stock a better class of barley pop! Don't mind if I put my feet up on the coffee table do you? (Good luck with the various duties!)

Recently, when I see a news item about the European football team Juventus, I read it as Juntavas. Now why should that be?
