What an age we live in

So Steve made a much-needed paper order at Staples, and unexpectedly won a Free Prize -- a digital movie camera!

Now, I remember when digital movie cameras were great honking pieces of equipment, with wires running to belt units and add-on mikes and lights and who knows whatall else, the entire apparatus weighing slightly more than your average three-year-old.

This thing?

I could add it to my charm bracelet, if I had one, and it would look perfectly at home. It fits in my palm, and takes its power from 3 AAA batteries. Frankly, it's a little hard to take seriously, but I'm trying not to hurt its feelings.

Weatherwise -- bright, blue and warm. Steve has been doing outside chores while I put the bedroom curtains to wash and did some dusting. Nothing says First Day of Spring like a woman wielding a dust cloth, unless it's a man driving a vacuum cleaner, which I'm promised to see, after lunch.

Actually, those tiny cameras are fun. They can hook up to your computer and act like a livecam. They take okay pictures. I have one that uses just one battery, uses an SD card, and can shift between long shots and short shots. No flash, however, so only the strongest of light gives you crisp clear pictures.

A lot of fun, otherwise.

Bah, humbug! Here in Texas we are celebrating "the first day of spring" with a bitter norther, freezing and snow forecast. With all the plums and peaches already in bloom. There goes the wild plum jelly for the summer, unless we squeak by with an extra degree or two warmer on our particular hill than they say.

Going to have a last fire or two in the fireplace; at any rate that will be nice.

(The thing is that a number of the expected things didn't happen, but a load of others did. So we have ubiquitous mobile phones with more computing power, than early SF expected to exist in the world, and digital cameras with more disk space than a Star Trek spaceship's computer, but still no personal flying cars. Or the one I really want, matter transmission / teleporters...)

On the other hand, most people are barely capable of handling a vehicle that navigates in two dimensions. As Charles Stross pointed out to Paul Krugman at last year's worldcon, would you want a teenager to have access to a flying car?
