As reported in these pages yesterday, we had received word that an  “inventory transfer order” had been sent to the Simon and Schuster warehouse, which was the first step in the journey of 1200 subscriber-sponsored Saltations to Maine.

Today, the warehouse called Baen with the information that there are not enough — not nearly enough — books in the warehouse to cover that transfer of inventory.

In fact, the first hardcover run of Saltation appears to have sold out — in just two weeks.

Baen is immediately going back to print.  But!  That means we need to ask those who pre-ordered to be patient. . .some while longer.  We apologize, but this is something that is completely out of our control — mid-list genre books just don’t sell out in two weeks.

There are a few — a very few books that were in the pipeline when the transfer order went out, and which are coming to Maine.  They count in dozens; not nearly enough to fill the orders outstanding.

We will keep you informed, as we’re informed.

In the meantime — thank you for your patience and for your on-going support.

We love you guys.

I'm happy Saltation sold out. I'm less happy that I have to wait longer. Luckily, the happy trumps the less happy.

Congratulations!

I think I see a visit to either Uncle Hugo's or Dreamhaven in my near future - I really want a first edition / first printing. I'll bring it along to Duckon and say "Please sign?"

Congratulations! That's fantastic news, despite the fact that now I'll have to wait even longer for the continuing adventures of Theo Waitley!

(Maybe Kepler's has a copy...)

Yay for the news but boo for the extra wait. But then from the looks of things it might be a good idea if mine was late anyway...

sold out!

omg!!! Sadness and joy all in one basket. Sell out should make your publisher ecstatic. As for me, patience is a virtue... :(
But wow! Something is going on, isn't it?

Congratulations! I don't mind having to wait for my personal copy -- the one I ordered for the library got there safely. In the meantime, I have electronic versions of it.

Ha!! Am I surprised? Nay! For why would it not be sold out in two weeks?? After all, this is a book written by two of my favorite authors of all time. Seriously, #10 authors (meaning I've read at least one of your books 10 times & probably more than one) and new release = sold out quickly. No, really. No shock here. I'll just be waiting patiently over here, petting the cats, writing my blog, playing with my 'store', waiting for surgery, and reading another author's series so that I can save yours for when I get my shiny new bound copy of Saltation. Whoot!

IOW It'll get here when it gets here. Rather like cats coming when they call. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't... and only the cat knows when.

mid-list genre books just don’t sell out in two weeks.

Actually, they do ... when it's your breakthrough book.

(Happened to me, a couple of years ago -- "Halting State" went into its third hardcover printing in its first month out the gate.)

The aftermath involves fat royalty cheques and an opportunity to negotiate the advances for subsequent books up by a triple-digit percentage (if you're willing to live dangerously).

Congratulations and welcome to success. Feels weird, doesn't it?

I bet Baen is happy.
Heck, I'm sure you're happy. :)

Many happy printings!

Does this mean I won't get my first edition, first printing signed edition? If not, big disappointment? I bought one in the store, will you all sign it if it is sent to you?

You realize this means that y'all must post all your future books in serial form online as first drafts? I bet Baen would go for it if Saltation keeps on at this rate.

This is indeed the best reason imaginable for a delay, it's wonderful. I'm kind of curious as to how big the print run was. Now I'll have to go out and find a first edition! :D ...thus adding to the need for printing more, which is a good thing?

Congratulations! OK, not so good from the signed copy point of view, but selling it out (and Baen immediately reprinting it) has to be a Good Thing. (Incidentally, do you know how many copies that is?)

Official: I have a "reading copy" (first edition but unsigned), if you are able to prioritise please do the people with no copies before mine. Especially since if they have been waiting they may not be able to get hold of copies through the booksellers now. I can wait...

Its the classic good news/bad news thing. Thank heavens for the ebook edition, waiting would be a lot harder without it. And congratulations. I hope it is the breakthrough that Mr Stross says - you deserve it.

Saltation sell out

Date: 2010-04-22 11:54 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hello,

I think this is a wonderful situation. So I get my signed copy a little later - no big deal. Again, this is really wonderful for you. Not too many years ago, I expect people said - 'Who are Lee and Miller, never heard of them'. Now the first run of your books sell out. This is also good for Baen, they make money and realize their insticts are good and they are fully justified for adding you to their stable of authors.

Living dangerously? Only for the last twenty years or so.

Congratulations and welcome to success.

Thank you.

Feels weird, doesn't it?

It's oddly unbalancing. I looked at the calendar this morning, saw the note that today was Saltation's original release day, and went -- but they've already sold out! -- and had to sit down for a few moments.

Congratulations on the sellout!

Though, like many, I have to express some disappointment that my signed copy will likely not be a first edition as well. Ah, well...

Date: 2010-04-22 12:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] keristor.livejournal.com
It used to be that "first edition" could go though many printings, an extra print run didn't mean that it wasn't "first edition", new editions were created by changes (possibly in format or typesetting). Has this changed?

Technically, things like ARCs can be considered earlier editions, especially when they escape into public hands. And in the case of Fledgling and Saltation it could be argued that the online draft-being-written was the first edition...

You are correct. I definitely mis-spoke (typed). I should say first-run first edition to clarify that I meant the hardcopy vs. online as well as which time the presses went through rather than how many times the editors touched it.

Regardless, this is just more incentive to buy another copy. ::grin:: I'll have a hardback to brag about no matter what the topic.

Well, the happies!

Except this means that obsessives like me shall have to scour the local bookshops for those precious first=printings (necessity, after all, exists). Which will make the book sell out even that much sooner, prompting even more printings, and (one hopes) more sales.

Well played, Lee & Miller. Well played.

Marvellous! I'll be happy to get mine eventually, but don't mind waiting in such a good cause. By accident rather than design (it came to hand when I was prospecting for something I knew I could enjoy in bits and pieces), I've been rereading parts of Fledgling, so my appetite is whetted. Guess Fledgling worked that way for others as well.

Am thrilled to hear that you've sold out the first print run. To borrow a term of general approbation from another fandom of mine:

"WETSU!"

Saw a first print run copy on the shelf at the Borders in Clarksville, Tennessee this evening.

I'm not in any anxiety over the promised signed copy: I have the digital version from Baen loaded on my iPhone, so I can read it as often as I like now, and my signed copy will make its way to me eventually. How could it be otherwise, given that I am dealing here with persons of worth?

I went out and purchased the hardcopy on Friday. I sat down and read it all, cover to cover, on Sunday. Mmmm! Yummy! I'm so glad I did that.

Getting my book signed

***I am very disappointed that the people who supported the authors, were not thought of when they arranged publication with the book company. It should have been arranged that we be the first ones to get a book. Not months from now. ***While I want a signed book, a second edition just doesn't satisfy. ***Fortunately, I was able to find a first edition, first printing. ***The question is ... can I make arrangements to send it to you guys to sign? I will even pay the additional cost of posting it back and forth.
