Sure, I wasn’t there; I swear I have an alibi
Friday, April 23rd, 2010 06:40 pmYeah, I’ve been listening to a lot of Gaelic Storm this week. Whatever gets you through, says I.
It was a long week. How long, you ask? So long that Friday came twice; once, yesterday, for a few fickle hours, then again, for keeps, today. The problem of whether the weekend will be similarly long, I leave as an exercise for the student.
Steve and I are tentatively scheduled to use at least part of the weekend in a drive southward. I will take the new camera and practice view-finder-less photography, which ought to be exciting.
Our trip to Florida in May is starting to look scarily close. With the help of our intrepid, not to say fearless, con liaison, we’ve confirmed our hotel room, nailed down a car rental, perused the information she sent us and now have a loose idea of what sites we’ll be looking to see. Pirate Dinner Theater reservations are in hand (yes!). I’ve started to make a list of things that must go south with us, including my floppy hat, sunscreen, The Leewit, Haysus, various charging cords, Oglethorpe…
[Ooh! Steve just came in and showed me a slide of the spaceship on the dunes that he took during our honeytrip to Hatteras Village, back in...1977? That sounds like it was so long ago. Very cool house, though. I wonder if it survived the several Bad Storms that have been through the area since. ]
So! Who’s going on vacation this year? Where? Can summer come soon enough?

Part of the problem is that every vacation for the past three years or so has been family-related, no pun intended. I am so ready for a selfish, tourist-y trip for just Rick and me.
But!
We do get to attend BayCon in May. That will be fun, although there are indications that the venture is not up to its usual excellence, due to problems of a legal, administrative nature. What will be, will be, I guess.
We are shy people, even in costume, so we go for the panels, and hope to occasionally find someone who will talk to us for a few minutes. I have a novel in the Writer's Workshop, which experience I've had before, and I am really looking forward to it with the new book. I love feedback.

Date: 2010-04-24 02:36 pm (UTC)Between the kids' schooling and camps and jobs, spouse's propensity for popping off to Africa for weeks at a time every couple of months, and oh yeah, the chronic understaffing at the library that makes every morning off for a doctor's appointment a dance of delicate negotiations that makes nuclear arms negotiations look like a toddle in the park...
...well, let's just say that my employer's "Use it or lose it" policy is a mite irritating.
But weep not for me. I shall squirrel out a day here, a day there, curl up in bed and attack the TBR pile.

Date: 2010-04-25 02:38 am (UTC)If the launch or return is delayed a day or two, there may be some disruption in Oasis programming. (A couple of our guests work at NASA and may be recalled to work. It has happened before...)
If the launch and/or return is delayed for a cumulative 3 days, you may have the opportunity to try to go over to the coast for the landing. Since this trip is to the ISS, the return flight usually tracks a bit more to the north and Orlando tends not to get the really nice sonic boom that announces that "the shuttle is home".

Date: 2010-04-26 02:27 pm (UTC)I am thinking about going to the high school reunion in August.
I very rarely do vacation during summer. Spring or fall. Cooler and usually less children. But I had bad timing on the DC thing. It was before spring break, but all the local schools were taking the children to see the museums.
Is it me or just my perspective? It feels like the museums have fewer exhibits and the exhibits they do have they dumb down – making them child friendly.
May sounds like a good time to do Florida. Early May that is.
