I think the author is Ann Bridge (aka Lady Mary O'Malley). Main character is Julia Probyn. There are several books:

The Light-hearted Quest
The Portuguese Escape
The Numbered Account
The Dangerous Islands
Julia in Ireland

A google search of 'julia colin aglaia' found it in Google's scan of Mystery Women: An Encyclopedia of Leading Women Characters in Mystery Fiction by Colleen Barnett. If you hadn't remembered Aglaia, I'm sure this wouldn't have worked!

Yes, it's almost certainly Ann Bridge - she's one of the under appreciated writers of that era, in my opinion at least.
