rolanni: (socks)

I opened the door to my half of the bedroom chest (formerly "Steve's piece*" which came as part of his marriage portion) and -- all my socks fell out onto the floor.

I mean ALL of my socks fell out onto the floor. Swearing, I gathered them up by the armsful and dumped them on the bed, telling Steve I'd deal with them this evening. Which I have done.

I love socks -- mmmm, soft, stretchy fabric caressing your feet, fluffy cushioning between your soles and a cold, uncaring floor. Mmmmm....

Socks come in ridiculous colors and you can wear them with impunity, because, hey -- socks. I have a pair of grey-and-cream striped socks that I'm very fond of. And another pair, that has the solar system embroidered on a bright blue foreground. The toes and heels of that pair are yellow. I have lots and lots of little green hiking socks, that wear like iron. Blue ones, too. Boot socks. I need more boot socks, actually (no, really), because I tend not to limit their use to the insides of boots, but drag them on over more modest socks on really cold days, and wear them around the house like slippers.

Why do I have so many socks? you ask. Good question.

First, socks are useful and necessary articles of clothing. Second, they're relatively cheap and plentiful. Third, there's nothing so sensually satisfying as putting on a new pair of socks for the first time -- a cheap thrill, you might say, and you'd be right. We need our thrills.

Seriously, you don't want to be without socks -- like brown rice, another thing that I tend to buy when I'm feeling pinched, and also when the checkbook's plump.

So, anyway, the socks are back in the piece, for the moment. I think I've stacked them so they won't fall out again.

For awhile, anyway.

*In the version of American English spoken in Baltimore, Maryland, where I spent my formative years, a "piece" is any sufficiently large object of furniture. "Sufficiently large" being very much in the eye of the beholder. In this instance, the "piece" is a rather modest, five foot tall, two-door, two-drawer bureau that I've been swearing we're going to replace with Something Useful for...just about forever, actually.

I have a five foot long, 1 door, 6 drawer piece I feel much the same about. It's lovely, but totally impractical for me/my space.

Hrmmm......

Socks are indeed one of the affordable pleasures of life...

To keep them from exploding out of the "piece", may I suggest some sort of Rubbermaid sweater box? I use them to corral all sorts of wayward garments.

I love, absolutely love my thick, soft, cushy llama socks. Unfortunately, at some point they met either warm/hot water or got tossed in the dryer. They might fit my 4-year-old grandson, now, but definitely not these size-11 feet. *is sad*

I agree about socks--but, being a knitter, must put a word in for the handknitted variety. They're even better than the store-bought kind!

Love socks, particularly colorful ones. I have a great collection of socks in wild patterns just because they are so fun. I can be all dressed up in corporate drag and then have purple, orange and green socks. Great fun.

"Socks come in ridiculous colors"

Or, in my case, black[1]. But then all of my clothes come in black, except for shirts for work and other 'formal' occasions which are white (and for really formal occasions, like weddings, I wear a tie -- that's black), and my underpants which are white.

[1] At least, they start as black. After repeated washing, though, they go interestingly non-black. Some fade to grey, some to blue, some to brown or purple, a few to red. They aren't being contaminated with other colours, either (see above; I wash white and black separately because otherwise the white gets contaminated), the dyes just fade that way.

Hi I'm Claire and I'm a sockaholic. Unfortunately not yet in recovery. I can't resist those cute socks with dogs and cats on them. And since the big box stores no longer carry interesting socks feeding my habit has become a huge challenge. Thanks for the sockdreams web site. The hunt is on.

Raymond here.

I always fancied getting stockings with clocks. Except these would be real clocks. Alarm clocks. Grandfather clocks. Hour glasses. Rolexes. Clepsydras. Turnip watches. Sundials.

The socks would be ugly as hell. But I’m a sucker for a pun.

I had always assumed a 'piece' of furniture was the correct *insert grammatically correct term here* thingy used to describe furniture, much like 'bushel' for oats and 'bale' of hay (what is that term, you writer people? It's 4.49am here, I can't be expected to think of everything!). I love socks too, I used to buy them in solid colours then mix up the pairs. Mmmmm.
