Today was consumed by phone calls and shoes.

The phone calls — vet appointments have been set; appointments for annual check-ups for the non-feline members of the household have been set; home visits from CPAP techs have been arranged. Truly, I am Queen of the Telephone.

Sigh.

The truth is — if these folks did appointments by email, I’d've been done weeks ago. Telephones are an instrument of the devil. I thought so even when we were on a party line.

(and who knows what that is, anymore?)

Regarding shoes — I had ordered in two pair from Zappos — a “sensible” pair, which I figured I’d keep; and a pair of Frye oxfords that I wanted to see, having once owned and put manymany hundreds of miles on a pair of Frye boots. I figured that, once seen, the oxfords would be returned.

Except — the sensible shoes were not only Sensible to the point of ugliness, they didn’t fit.

And the Frye oxfords?

Fit like they were made for my feet alone.

. . .I bow to my doom.

I did get a few words written on behalf of George, and Steve and I worked out a motivation problem in what will be Story the Oneth in the Liaden Universe® short story extravaganza. I hope to have time to plot that out in detail tomorrow.

Tomorrow is, by the way, Wednesday, which is the Monday of day-job summertime. Happily, it is immediately followed by Thursday, which is the Friday of same.

Couple of suggestions for the scheduling woes, some places that haven't moved into email will accept faxes. You should be able to send document from your computer as a fax & receive it also.

Is the problem with the phone that they don't answer or something else like very limited hours?

I *think* some cottages with very low land-line coverage still have party lines. I remember, as a child, that several of my friends homes also had party lines, and since the homes had teenage girls, there was some unpleasantness about the length of time said girls could stay on the phones...

I know what a party line is and my family had one when we lived in Cincinnati when I was a girl. The other woman never used it and we were on it all the time. Maybe she listened in.

I do, I do!*waves hand*
Never had one, but I know what they are ... I hear there's still a few somewhere out in ... Michigan? The holders refuse to switch because they're so cheap!

Nope, the problem is that I hate to talk on the phone and will do almost anything to avoid doing so. Including putting off making necessary appointments until they really can't be put off any longer.

Ah, a fellow member of Phone Phobes International. (A tongue-in-cheek "organization" I founded a while back. Motto: "Don't call us; we won't call you.")

We had a party line. It was really easy to charge to the wrong number, just short the wrong connectors (so if someone complained about the bill both sides could pass it off as the other's fault, and the phone company had to just waive it because they couldn't decide).

But it was even more fun before we had dialling from the home for long distance, you had to press the button and wait for the operator. One time my mother got bored and was singing, the operator waited until she'd finished the song rather than interrupt her! So different from the rush these days.

And then when international dialling first came in, and we went to a friend's house (his father was feeelthy rich and wouldn't mind) and called exotic places like America and Belgium and China (dialling numbers art random) just to hear the strange accents. The people we called seemed just as thrilled to hear someone from far away.

Those were the days, my friends...

Just as well you ordered both pairs of shoes

Otherwise you wouldn't have even ONE pair.

Man, you are achieving All Kinds of Work. Color me impressed as
I've hit the slumps and have much to accomplish this week.

Going back to your (plural) writing styles: many of us love a New
and Different take on a Classic Tale, so a science fiction story
in the language of fairy tales? Or a revenge story where the
characters talk like Oscar Wilde? Very attractive!

Life's too short to wear ugly shoes.

And hopefully you're being inspired by Kirsty's angelic voice... I can seriously empathise with the shoe issue, my feet were borrowed from a duck (wide, so wide at the front, and narrow to the point of invisibility at the back). Shoes were invariably ugly and sloppy, until I discovered Duo Boots, and now I am both stylish and well-fitted. Well fit. Well fitting. My shoes fit. Have a look at www.duoboots.com.
