I love you though you hurt me so

OK, so, for the next while Complexity R Us here at the Cat Farm. I’ll be a little distracted; and, I fear, a little less kind to people who cannot resist the urge to post Cute anonymous comments.  Or, yanno, overtly obnoxious anonymous comments.  Apologies in advance to the majority who are polite, generous, and brave enough to sign their names to their posts.

Yesterday, for one heart-stopping moment, I thought, that yes! the filing had achieved sentience — and that first act of its newly-awakened intelligence would be the traditional slaying of its creator.

Sadly, it had only achieved an improper center of gravity, and slid to the floor with a rush and a rumble.

So, yanno, yesterday? I filed.

Today, I do believe I’ll write.

For those who remember my mentioning that the trip to town has for the last several months been enlivened by a detour. This is why. Do examine the bottom picture on the right closely.

One of the things that I’ve been told for, well, years, now, by medical personnel is that I really should stop drinking coffee. Apparently this is routinely said to Ladies of a Certain Age. I compromised by cutting down, which is, I think, a good thing. Back in the day, I mainlined office coffee, black. Nowadays, I drink two, maybe three, cups in the morning, with cream-and-chocolate-milk, and occasionally a cup of high-test in the afternoon. That’s enough. And in the meantime, Science keeps coming up with itsy little reasons why coffee might not be Evil after all.

Those of you who live out in San Francisco know all about the most excellent Borderlands Books, owned and operated by Alan Beatts. The store newsletter arrived a couple weeks ago, but I just got around to reading it yesterday. Alan’s written an interesting piece about Amazon, and as it’s also available on the web, I urge you all to take a look. The newsletter is here, and the article is the fourth header down: From The Office.

There was something else I wanted to mention — Ah! I remember.

For a limited time only! Which is to say, through Midnight on October 31, Lee and Miller echapbook Calamity’s Child is on sale for $0.99 at Smashwords, BN, Amazon

Calamity’s Child includes Liaden Universe® story “Sweet Waters” and Nick-and-Nora steampunk story “A Night at the Opera”.

And now? I do believe I’ll have another cup of coffee.

Is the bridge removal tied to congressional redistricting?

[identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd think so, but no. That bridge has been on the slate for replacement for at least five years, and kept being shoved to the bottom. This last winter left potholes that allowed drivers to observe the stream from a New and Interesting angle.

That brought it to the top of the list.

coffee

I too am a dedicated coffee drinker of a certain age. I also have problems with anxiety and have cut down to 2 cups a day on most days. I am glad to read that I SHOULD drink 2 cups in order not to be depressed! Excellent news. :-)

Morning coffee...nectar of the ghods

(Anonymous) 2011-09-29 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am well past being of a "certain" age and I "religiously" imbibe my two cups in the morning spiked with glops of coffee creamer such as White Chocolate Raspberry or Chocolate Caramel. I do avert my eyes from the ingedients list...why spoil a perfectly good sybaritic moment...and savor every chemical laden, caffine laced sip with no shame or guilt.

October approacheth. And royalty results. May I say that I am hoping for bounty overflowing for you and Steve and that something truly spectacular such as GHOST SHIP earning out occurs. I know, I know. Not likely since it was only released in August but we, your devoted fans, can dream, can't we? Will you be able to tell how close it is to the Promised Land of free flowing royalties? Or does Baen just give you a "Not yet, child. Cultivate patience." But we all also know Daav's opinion of patience.

The October statement covers January-June 2011, so Ghost Ship won't even be in the list of titles.

That's an interesting piece on Amazon. If anyone needs further reason to think twice about dealing with them, reading about what goes on at their Pennsylvania warehouse might prove enlightening. http://www.mcall.com/news/local/amazon/

Ya know, the way you folks talk about coffee sometimes makes me think I should try it ...

[identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't like the way it smells, you won't like the way it tastes.

Experience forces me to add that, even if you do like the way pipe tobacco smells? You won't like the way it tastes. Four-year-old me made the experiment, so you don't have to.

Sadly, nothing tastes as good as coffee smells.

Kindle sold at a loss

(Anonymous) 2011-09-30 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding the Borderlands editorial: The idea that selling the Kindle at a loss should not be treated quite so harshly. When DVD players first came out they were well over $100 and going onto $200 in some cases. When I bought one for under $50 some years later (and one for under $25 after that) I remarked on it to a friend in the movie industry. He said that the major studios were subsidizing the no-name manufacturers so that it would be easier to sell "content." That is, DVDs of their movies. And remember that Kodak, in them thar olden days, used to sell really cheap cameras because they wanted to sell film. Whatever that was...
Just sayin'
All the best,
Robert Tolchin

Well, yanno, to quote my grandmother, "And if all the other kids at school laid down on the trolley track, would you do it, too?"

Which, if you don't speak allegory, or Baltimoreese, means, "Just because other people do it, doesn't make it right."

Thank you for signing your post.
