Cutting the rug

As promised, the stove guy was here at 7 a.m. He unhooked the stove, and moved it out to the deck (a moment of silence, during which we’re all grateful for the NEW deck, which is up to bearing the weight of the stove), where it now stands, covered over with a tarp.

The floor guys and girl arrived at about half-past-eight and commenced in moving the refrigerator to the living room and the microwave to the counter, taking doors off of hinges and baseboards off of walls. They made a pattern for the kitchen floor, tore up the hall carpet, stapled quarter inch plywood over the old kitchen floor and in general made the cats very nervous.

Tomorrow, they’ll be back, they say, to glue down the kitchen floor, take up the living room rug and lay new carpet down the hallway and in the living room. They say they will finish this project by end of day tomorrow.

May it be so.

In other news, it turns out that I can proofread, but I cannot write, while staples are being shot into plywood at 200 rounds per second, so I’m about half-way through the Carousel Tides galleys.

And now? I’m going to Home Despot.

I'm impressed at that 7AM arrival! Having just put a new floor in my kitchen and hall earlier this year, I understand the noise and effort! Would love to see how it looks when done. Can we hope for a picture or two? maybe with the cats if they have accepted the new carpet.. can sure understand that they would be nervous at noise an strange folks rearranging their house.

P.S. I love the name Home Despot (grin)

Now....on the subject of carpet. This is, of course, just my opinion. My opinion is.....carpet is the enemy of all pet owners. This is because pets make the inevitable ooopsies.

I have an all vinyl floor. 5 dogs produces a lot of oopsies even though they are very well house broken. Mistakes and various sick issues arise. .. Clean up is fast.If one is pet proofing a house watch out for that new kind of laminate floor. Apparently the kind that I know about doesn't do well with liquid spills. So no laminates for me.

Of course remodelling for the purpose of selling a house is a different matter. One has to put in what most customers would expect.

If the staple gun makes you nervous...Poor cats. They'll have to be given a cat medal for above and beyond the call of duty when the house is all done.

We went with hardwood (prefinished red oak), and I have never been happier, although one of our cats who was very ill and failing at the time managed to find an out-of-the-way corner to use and stained the wood there. Before we move we will have to have those boards replaced, but with that exception, it has been wonderful. However, I do not live in Maine. I live in a place where rugs serve well enough to keep the floor comfortable. I imagine it is different in the northern extremes. Our upper floor is still carpeted, but that will be replaced in time (and $).

Didn't trust wood to this level of use. It gets pretty cold where I live but too bad. I won't even have throw rugs. Much to much upkeep.

One could also have vinyl tiles.

Sorry about your kitty. Sounds like she went over the Rainbow Bridge after that.
