Coulda been worse

So, this morning, up betimes, oatmeal, coffee, mail check, off to gym.  A beautiful, sunny, warm day (43F/6C), there are a couple piles of snow here and there, but mostly there's grass, and dry, dusty road.

Do the gym thing, come home, head full of  Theo.  Steve is on his way out.  My car needs windshield washer fluid.  There's a jug of the stuff  'round back of the house.  I head out to get it, down a long, grassy slope of ground that's mud just under the grass and frozen just under that half-inch of slidey, slidey mud.

Get to the back of the house, which is in shadow.  The grass is suddenly crunchy with ice, I head down the hill toward the woodpile and the jug of washer fluid. . .

You see where this is going, right?

The mitzvah is that I didn't break my arm or sprain my wrist or -- avert! --  break any fingers.

What I did do is sprain my ankle.  A bad sprain, I'm told.  Which is good.  If you're going to sprain your ankle, I always say, sprain  it like you stole  it.

. . .or something.

Anyhow, Steve came and levered me up, all over mud that I  was, and eased me back up the hill and into the car and off we merrily drove to the ER, for Xrays and whatnot.  I am now richer by a pair of aluminum crutches,  an air cast, and a bottle of vicodin, of which I have taken one, and there'll be no more of that on the morrow.

I find that I am extraordinarily graceless on crutches; a menance to cats and man.  I will, I expect, be a denizen of the couch for the next two or three days.  Need to get Steve to copy Dragon Ship onto The Leewit's SD card so I can get back to work.

Thanks to the vicodin, I'm taking the night off.  Double words tomorrow, that's the ticket.

In the meantime, I started reading Rob Thurman's Chimera at the ER, and I do believe I'll continue on with that project.

Question for the Linux gurus who read here:  Gmail is scolding me and letting me know that the  Firefox on The Leewit is too old to talk to, and has busted me back to HTML.  Since one of the reasons I have The Leewit is so I can deal with writing and correspondence while we're traveling, I need a fully functional Gmail.  I downloaded the newest Firefox for Linux, but!  I don't know where it downloaded to and, for bonus points, I don't know how to install it.

Help?

If you downloaded the file thru Firefox finding the download location is easy.
Select the tools menu, select options the choose the general tab if it's not already selected.
About half way down the page will be the download location.
Go there and click on the the file that says Firefox setup.
No crutches needed. :)

*if* the medical team has recommended icing the ankle to reduce swelling, you might want to try a rice ice pack. Take an old sock (if you have something like the old white tube socks, they work fine) and partially fill it with rice, then make a knot to close off the open end. Put it in the freezer for some hours (I store one in the freezer against need). Apply as needed or instructed. Frozen peas do have their place, but once they thaw can get rather wet and drippy; the rice pack is much less messy. If possible, make two, so one can be in use while the other chills.

This setup can also be used as a heat pack -- nuked until warm.

At least the next few days are good ones to stay inside! The forecast for Greater Boston is wind chills of about 0 by Tuesday night -- I understand your area is looking at wind chills of -10.

Ow. Sprained ankles hurt like the dickens.

I found the forearm grip crutches much easier to manage than the traditional under the armpit ones. And that a pillow under the covers keeps the covers from weighing down on the feet.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

I'm glad your ankle isn't broken. :)

Depending on your flavor of Linux, typing "sudo apt-get firefox" into Terminal will do what you want. If you want to install it from the package you downloaded-

The package is probably in your Downloads or Documents folder. If you move it to /opt and then unzip it, you will be done and it is likely that your old shortcuts will work fine.

As I usually open firefox from terminal, I added it to $PATH but you might want a prettier option.

You might want to check out http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/install-firefox3tarbz2-linux/ or some similar helpguide.

If you have more details I can send more advice. :)

Vicodin is for taking at bedtime so that tossing and turning isn't painful. That way it leaves you free to use your brain when awake.

To add to what [livejournal.com profile] estrelladesax has said, if the flavour of Linux uses the Debian package management system (which would work with apt-get, although the Red Hat/Fedora package system will work with a slightly different command), you might have to update the sources list for your repositories so that it can find the new version. Some devices have repositories with older versions as higher priority in the list, so as to keep the versions that are known to work well with the device at the time it was made, even when newer ones are available. But all of that is moot if you are installing the new version of Firefox manually.

You might be able to see what packages are on your system and what repositories are on your list by going to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager, if that's in the menu.

Ankle, etc.

Ouch. Bad luck I say as to the ankle. I myself have a bum knee. Having no proper orthopedic doctor here in our small town. I have to go over to a bigger one 70 miles or so away to get a diagnosis on Wednesday. But the cats benefitted. You stuck on the couch. Hope the ankle heals very fast. For cold I use one of those blue things that one freezes in the freezer.

As for the Firefox. I got mine installed by having the nice girl at Pay Pal do it for me. And later again on a new clomputer by my computer guru. I can't download very much because then....it does get lost in the computer.

I am forever in awe of all your gurus out there ready to respond day or night. Incredible.

Ouch. I wish good things for the ankle.

Tangentially, this weekend past I happened across another story with a heroine named Theo: "Magnolia Blossom", one of Agatha Christie's less-known stories (it's a stand-alone, without any of her famous characters in it). It strikes me as something of a melant'i study, though of course none of the characters would know the word.

So sorry you fell, and will hope for a speedy recovery and a working LEEWIT.
I think they prescribe Vicodin based on a 350 pound man. I was injured in Navy bootcamp (a marching group did a "right oblique, march!" and knocked me off the road!) and the doctor cut the pills up into 4ths. He said he couldn't prescribe less due to regulations, but that one pill was way too much for my then 110lbs and I should start with a 4th, up it to half if I needed it. Take care, Kathy of No CA

And- comfrey , leaf or root, simmered as a tea and applied as a poultice by soaking the cheesecloth in it and laying on- I swear by it. It actually helps cells regenerate ( called a bone-knit in old herbals), and shortens healing time by quite a bit. If cold is called for, chill the tea? and conversely, warmth is easy :)
Thinking really good thoughts at your ankle, and you.

Many sympathies.

The crutches can also throw your shoulders out. After a sprained ankle mine needed considerable attention from a massage therapist. (And the Dr in the ER told me that broken ankles are much faster to mend. I was in to much pain to thank him properly for that comforting thought.)
Speed in healing depends on staying *off* the foot, not stumbling back to work like I did. -voice of experience-

The blue gel ice bags are good -no sharp corners.

Spraining our ankle is a hard way to get people to help ou download applications. (I am truly impressed at how many people whipped th instructions for you.) Following along with the instructions for the rice cold pack (I'll have to remember that one) - it is RICE. Rest , Ice Compression and Elevation. That should reduce the pain and hurry along the repair. If the ankle is propped up as you sprawl on the couch, you don't have to worry about the crutches either.
Hope you feel better soon. Jeanne T (aka Capricchio)

Just wondering -- if you click on help -> about Firefox, is there a big "get update" or "apply update" or something like that in the middle of the about? Firefox is usually pretty good about finding itself?
From: [identity profile] redpimpernel.livejournal.com
For every (small chunk of time, say 15 minutes) that you are on your ankle (even with crutches), during the first 2-3 days, you add about a week onto your recovery limping/gimping time. (Empirical knowledge, tested too often in my life.)

So stay off that ankle & keep it elevated! If possible, keep it elevated above your heart to help reduce swelling. Icing is good!

I hope the pain isn't too bad. Bad sprains are actually worse then breaks. Breaks usually heal in 8 weeks, not so sprains.

I see that your wonderful experts have now given you advice on the ankle. I think that massage therapists are great too.

I have e-mailed you at sharonlee@korval.com so I hope that you will check that address to go and look.

Good luck. Barks to the cats,
C.
