PSA:  Several Concerned Readers have written privately; this is for those who may wonder in silence:

Yes, to the best of my knowledge and belief, the mass market edition of Carousel Tides by Sharon Lee will be in stores at the end of the January.  No, I don't know why it's not in the publisher's catalog; I haven't seen the publisher's catalog, and don't write the publisher's catalog.

Thanks very much for your interest.

State of the Rolanni:
Ankle's still sprained.  In technicolor.  It hurts. Actually, all of me hurts. Also? I can't walk.  To say that this does not make me happy is. . .an understatement.

. . .yeah. . .

Because of the fall, and the fallout from the fall, I've gotten behind on the very, very necessary daily quota of words for Dragon Ship.  To say that this does not make me happy is. . .well, you know the drill.

The Leewit in the news:
As reported elsewhere -- It comes about that the original ASUS netbook software, otherwise known as The Leewit's brains, was not upgradable, and would not accept upgrades of on-board software.  Steve has therefore very kindly performed a brainectomy, and The Leewit as of this writing has Linux Mint brains, which appear to be functioning just fine, thank you.  Also, I get to dork around with the screen color, fonts and other preferences, which is soothing, in a playing-with-your-dollhouse kind of way.

Random Kvetching:
In the arena of Stoopid Amazon Tricks. . .

That check they sent me in error, after deducting  the $15 fee for cutting a paper check, has arrived.  It's for a total of!

Seventeen cents.

Now I know why they thought I might have some trouble cashing it.

Also!  A couple weeks ago now, in the email transmitting royalties from Amazon to myself, was an instruction to sign into my Vendor Account  at insertwebaddresshere, in order to view "all my information."  I had never opened a Vendor Account, but I am nothing if not obedient to Amazon's every wish and whim, so off I went, in order to view "all my information."

Except that my password didn't work and I had no note of a password for this particular site, having never actually been there before and so I banged around until I found a contact form and wrote Support a message.  Support wrote back, asking me to send the email that included the instructions, which I did.

A couple days later, I got a note from Support telling me I had to log into my account at Vendor Account in order to send them the requested information; correspondence sent by email to the originating address would not arrive.  I ignored it.  A couple days later?  Same message.  This morning?  Amazon is closing the inquiry since I haven't logged into my account and provided them with the information they asked for.  And they included in that letter a link to Did We Answer Your Question and Did We Fail to Answer Your Question.  On the FAIL page there was a comment box.

Yes, I did relieve my feelings.

Coon Cat Logic:
Mozart is being so! very! pleased! about getting all this bonus time on the couch that I'm beginning to think he paid off Quiet and Louder to hose down the hill.

State of the Steve:
Steve is cooking, doing the laundry, washing dishes, tending cat boxes, and performing the occasional, necessary brainectomy.

. . .which kind of brings us full circle.

not nearly as exciting as at yours...

the holiday decorations are still up, and will be until Candlemas, so I am reveling in real pine scent, while recovering from a double bout (and two week long episode) of bronchitis and sinusitis and am finally able to sleep through the night
:)

I love the lightning in your avatar/picture.

best wishes for a better tomorrow

At my house, my Bengal cats have their noses out of joint because I returned to work yesterday after 2.5 weeks off and am no longer at their beck and call.

It is amazing how quickly they decide such things as vacations are permanent, and how noisily they kvetch when it turns out they were wrong about that.

Carousel Tides

If by publisher's catalog you mean the BAEN website and publication schedule, CAROUSEL TIDES appears there as a February release. If the stores put out that week's new stock on Tuesday as they usually do, the book would technically be a January release because that Tuesday is 31 January. If however they wait until the next Tuesday to display it for sale, that would make it a February release as stated in the BAEN publishing schedule. Guess it'll depend on the individual store's practice. I've already got mine, both in Kindle version and the original dead tree edition so it's an academic issue for me but I'll watch for it anyway at my local B&N.

Complication from a bug landed me in the hospital last week. This week I get to miss "faculty held hostage days" which is a good thing. I find out tomorrow if I get to miss the first week of the semester, perhaps not a good thing.

The furry beast is very happy that I am home all the time and doesn't care why.

There exist padded-at-knee-height scooter things for those who find crutches impossible. It puts the bad leg on wheels-or-kneels.

Some Expertise Coming Up!

Date: 2012-01-06 07:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] claire774.livejournal.com
Aha! I finally get to be an expert. My right knee collapsed on me recently. More accurately it collapsed under me. Christmas morning actually. What a pain! Crutches are also extremely difficult for me. So I bought a spiffy new computer chair on rollers. It is possible to sit in the chair and roll on it forwards and backwards using ones good leg or foot or whatever. Perhaps you already have such an item of furniture in your house. My old chair was very old and squeeked when it rolled and scared the dogs. The new one is a dream of rolling. Then when your ankle is better you can lean on the back of such a chair to take most of the weight off the bad ankle and put it on your arms and roll around walking that way. One can also load up the chair with whatever needs to be carried around when one can't walk very well. Of course you can always buy one of those scooters which really old people buy to get around their homes: Hoverrounds, etc. But the said old people get them as part of their Medicare I believe. And also why buy such a thing for a short term problem? Luckily there are cute scooters with baskets at the supermarket. They go "beep, beep, beep" when they back up which is really fun.

Now after treatment for 10 days from my friendly chiropractor, who is a genius, I am walking again and driving too. I had to pay a visit yesterday to the scary orthopedic surgeon in our quite far away larger community where such specialists may be found. Not good news long term for my knees.....but never mind, I'll have to think about that later. When in the supermarket over there I heard a "crash!!" I knew what it was before even looking. It was a poor lady crashing into a display with her scooter. I'm glad I was able to avoid doing that. Really....I crash into those stupid displays all the time when walking around the supermarkets. No scooter necessary.

Now, I would like to apply to Steve for a brainectomy. My brain is just about useless in the area of arithmatic or any kind of math. I have to pay the pet sitter for feeding the dogs when I can't walk and the chair scares the dogs. The sitter is doing something weird with cash instead of checks. The nice girl at the bank had to figure out how to arrange the cash to pay the sitter. This the teller did in her head. I can't do that because of the faulty brain which I have suffered with my whole life. This could be a whole new career path for Steve. Doing Brainectomies, that is, inbetween writing the cookbooks as I suggested before.

I see that cats are now kvetching which is soooo funny! I think you have a kvetching cat and someone else has two. I'm all for cats learning a foreign language. You just never know when that could come in very handy. My dogs really never kvetch. Any unhappiness can be quickly remedied with a few treats. They are extremely easily bribed.

When the cats start kibbitzing though....watch out!

I'm glad the Leewit is feeling all better and hope that your ankle will be all better soon too.

We are starting to have a roof! It's only been how many weeks? Let's see (counts on fingers) 8 weeks since the old one blew off. The roofers started Tuesday and reliable information says it takes two weeks to complete IF the weather cooperates. I note the forecasters call for snow this weekend...Sigh. Jen from CO
