As someone who has suffered a serious ankle sprain, I recommend the not overdoing things method. If they've given you exercises or physical therapy to do, then make sure you do them, but in general be careful you don't reinjure yourself and set the whole process back.

The walking boot sounds great. When I needed to be mobile, I was prescribed an ankle stabilizing orthotic (what most people would call a brace) which worked wonders.
