I was also thinking of a palanquin...but the concom may not have that many extra volunteers on hand.
Speaking of volunteers, though: if you think you're going to need wheels at all, I suspect that neither you nor Steve is going to want to push a wheelchair. (Pushing yourself in a wheelchair is hard on arms/wrists, and we want you to be able to type fast so we get our book fixes sooner!) So you'd need someone to handle that for you.
It might be worth discussing the potential issues with the concom; if they know they have plenty of volunteers, a wheelchair is likely to be less expensive to rent than a scooter, but a scooter gives you the most flexibility. In Boston scooters can be rented for about $120 for a long weekend, in Florida scooters can be rented for about $30 a day, but I have no info on Tennessee -- sorry!
