Y'a know, I wonder if Hawthorne was being literal? If I remember right, he was fairly heavily influenced by religion (Puritan?) so that "damned" might be more than just a perfunctory curseword as it often is used today. There's also the quirkiness that a romance, at that time, I think was different from our modern concept? I believe most of the novels at the time were all called romances, including Hawthorne's work. I just wonder if he is saying quite what we might imagine when he comments on those damned romance writers.
