The problem with academics and publishing is that academics very often give their writing away, either to the university that they work for, or to the press that ultimately publishes their work. So, to them, copyright really is a useless impediment. And they simply won't listen to those of us who actually make our living from our copyrights. I don't know if it's because we're largely writing genre so we must all be idiots, or because what's done in academia is by definition More Important than what's done elsewhere, or because academics have the right to everything, whether it belongs to them or not, or...
I've long thought that we ought to call academic publishing and real world publishing by two different names, because they really are two different things.
