In which the gods of winter exact tribute

Back aways, when we moved into this house, Yule came, as it always does at a certain time of year, and we were broke, as we often are at the same season.  Steve was working at the computer store at the time, and on Christmas Eve, his boss came through with a totally unexpected Cash Bonus.

So!  After the computer shop closed for the holiday, we went to the grocery store, bought a celebratory dinner, and, in order to add some green goodwill to the house, we also bought a little cedar tree in a pot, with a tinfoil star on top.  It was a nice little presence in the kitchen over the winter, and when spring came, we planted it outside our bedroom window.

Against, I think, everybody's expectations -- I include the cedar tree itself in this -- the little tree grew into quite a large tree; became the nesting tree for several generations of birds; breathed its wonderful aroma into our window on hot summer nights, and soothed us to sleep.

I just walked into the bedroom and noticed something wrong with the window.  I thought the cats had been at the shade, but when I looked out, I realized what had happened.

Today's snowfall has taken the cedar tree; it's lying, trunk-broken, on the ground.

I'm. . .kind of sad about this.

if you can, find a chunk of the trunk and see about having something carved from it. Yes, I'm sentimental about my damn trees but it sounds like you are, too, so...

Very sad.

I had a cedar go unexpectedly once in nice weather. Close examination showed that runoff from the roof had cause the truck to rot down along the outside to only about 2 inches in diameter. I was just happy it decided to fall alongside the house rather than into it.

Maybe you could find a little sprout under the snow and pot it. Mine puts out all sorts of starters.

Wow. I just saw the news and had no idea just how much snow you got.

Always sad to lose a tree

Doubly sad to lose one you planted yourself. Had to cut an apple tree down last week - pruned it a bit when I found the whole trunk was moving. When I had cut it I saw the whole center had rotted.

Cedars are one of my favorites - hop that a shoot or two is salvageable.

We lost a 4" limb out of the side-yard maple. It came down where we would have parked the second car, if we still had a second car . . .

Snow seems to be slacking off, over here. Maybe 10" total. The city plow left us a nice berm.

Very sorry to hear about your loss of the tree. Another asked if you could find a sprout. Maybe you could take it with you when you move.
