rolanni: (The Dragon in Exile)

Well, THAT wasn't how the day was supposed to go. . .

The Day, as Planned, included a stop to gas up Kineo the Wonder Subaru before driving cross-town for an appointment at the Radiology Department at the hospital.  At about 9:50, I was walking down the sidewalk toward the main entrance to the hospital when I -- fell off the kerb.

No, I don't know HOW I fell off the kerb; suffice that I did, and tried to twist to regain my balance, went down hard on one knee, at which point my body got with the program, and I twisted so that I flopped over onto my side, and ohbytheway slamming my ribs into the nice hard asphalt.

A woman who had been coming down the walk toward me, rushed up, exclaiming, "That was a terrible fall!  Are you all right?"

I, of course, was more embarrassed than hurting -- hello, adrenaline -- leapt to my feet, assured her I was fine, looked at my left knee which was kind of stinging, but, hey, how bad could it be, if the jeans weren't torn -- and found that I had a respectable scrape, but nothing really serious.

At that point, a PA came rushing out of the OBGYN door, which I was nearing when I fell, and she also told me that I had taken a terrible fall.  I assured her that I was fine, just a skun knee.  She looked doubtful, asked me where'd I'd been going, I told her Radiology, and she walked me there, about a mile out of her way, and by the time we arrived, I found that -- anyone?

C'mon, you guys, this one's EASY -- yes, you!  What did I find?  Very good.

I found that my skun knee was now swollen up to the size of a Regulation Baseball.

I asked the radiology receptionist for ice.  She took one look and yelled for her supervisor, who dispatched a volunteer for an ice bag, found out why I was there and together we formed the plan that I would have my appointment, and then they would take me to the ER for an Xray, since I had fallen on hospital property.

Those things eventually came to pass, and I proceeded in a homeward direction, stopping at the grocery store for things that I was completely out of, and now I'm home and have three cats within an arm's reach.

The plan for the rest of the day is to eat a lunch salad, with a side of aspirin, and try to sleep it off.

No music today, sorry. . .

I'm sorry. That adrenaline rush covers a lot of pain. I hope the aspirin/sleep/cat therapy help enormously.

Ack! Tuck and roll! Last year I was cutting up a wind-downed dead tree above the driveway. I had my chainsaw in my right hand and went to hop on top of and over a little one-foot high wall onto the driveway. Unfortunately, there was a loop of ivy on top into which my left foot became entangled. I already had forward momentum, so I'd reached the point of no return. Time slowed down. What went through my head was, "Tuck and roll! Tuck and roll!" So as I was going down, I reached across my body with my right arm and chainsaw, and let that rotation pull me around so I was rolling sideways when I hit. Not even a scrape. I'd managed to distribute the shock over my right side and back such that I didn't even end up sore. I just sat there and laughed. And thought - "I'm getting too old for this!" But then I seem to think that a lot lately ;p

Cats on the lap are said to be good therapy for bruised knees.

Oh dear! I hope your knee recovers soon. I usually feel really stupid when I fall and somehow it seems like the falls that don't hurt much when they happen are the ones that turn out to be the worst later. I managed to catch my foot in something while I was going out my door a few days ago and ended up going sprawling across my porch. Fortunately I just ended up with big bruises on both knees rather than doing anything worse.

Hospitals is dangerous places. Now you need to worry about the MRSA you picked up in that scrape . . .

Cat therapy can work wonders. Keep at it.

Ow. Ow. Ow. Memories of my broken ankle fall flash through my mind. I do hope X-Ray was negative? I remember worrying about torn tendons, didnt have those, but did have torn ligaments. RICE for you - rest, ice, compression, elevation (the last is especially important). Sounds like you've got most of it, and second martianmooncrab: alternating ice and cat. Rest up, good thoughts are one the way to you.

Ohmygoodness!!!
I hope the ice-and-cats work, and you feel MUCH better tomorrow!!!!

Oh my

Definitely ice for the first 24 hours. And I agree with Margotinez; elevation is helpful, though a bit of a PITA.

It's been a rough day for some of my favorite authors. I just read on C. J. Cherryh's blog that Jane managed to drop a large rock on the end of her finger while working in the yard today. There was blood. Hope the treatment is effective and you feel better soon.

heat packs

Definitely novel use of cats as heat packs.
Hope the knee is ok soon.

Ouch!

I had a similar fall (hurt ankle not knee) a few weeks back, and it was very annoying - I was sure that my footing was OK, but went over anyhow.

Ice and elevation helped, and it seems to have cleared up, and I hope yours does too.

I hate it when the adrenaline wears off. I hope you recover quickly.
