It's in!  It's up!  It's ready to rumble!

. . .and I do mean rumble.

We want to thank all of you so much for helping us go forward with this big step.  Not only did you give us encouragement, you gave us the confidence we needed to commit to such a large, expensive project.  Knowing that we will be able to pay this off by the end of next year is almost as comforting as knowing that the heat and the lights will stay on here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory, even if the lines go down.

Here are pictures of our new, fully operational generator.

The Confusion Factory Generator Installation Project was made possible by the cash contributions of many, many very kind and generous people.  Thank you all!

Woo Hoo! (as they used to say somewhere on the intarwebs...)

Back in the 70's, a friend of my tenant told me he'd just been up to Steve Wozniak's house nearby. He'd been helping someone put in a huge generator run by a Caterpillar diesel. They system was designed so that if the power went out, the generator would start up and run and the house would have absolutely no power interruption. I asked him why and he said that Woz had hundreds of arcade video games around the house and every time the power went out, he'd lose all the high scores. (His ex-wife now has the house ;)

Wish I had a setup like yours, but I'd have a hard time finding a place for it and a propane tank. I run on several battery banks salvaged from an internet hosting center. They're pretty old batteries now and I don't know how long they're good for, but so far they've kept the basics going as long as I needed them. The well pump and heat pump, though, would require a lot more power...

I hope someday we will be able to get a generator installed at our place as well. We've gotten as far as getting the concrete pad poured and creating a utility closet around the electrical panel where the cross-over panel can be installed, but then cash flow realities stopped us from going any further. We live in a part of the county that the powers that be have designated rural, so we are also on a well. We haven't had a long enough power outage recently to cause me to throw away everything in the fridge, but we also work out of our home and having the network down at all is inconvenient to say the least.

Way to go

A magnificent sight - also a comforting one as well.
Hope that the "theoretical" easy install of the propane was just that.
