Yesterday, we took a Writers Half Day, knocking off for a late Chinese lunch, followed by a couple games of Scrabble.

Today, given the news that Winter, is, indeed and at last, coming to Central Maine, includes a trip to town to pick up necessities that we would have gotten on our next Regularly Scheduled Trip to Town, early next week, however! That is now inked in as a Storm Day.

This is what the next few days look like, here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory:

Winter is set to arrive in stages, starting tonight with a session of freezing rain, moving into Sunday with 1-3 inches of snow and ice expected. We get a breather Sunday night into Monday, except for temps 'waaaaaay lower than we've been used to even on the overnights thus far, then Tuesday? Stuff gets real.

Tuesday Watching a potential winter storm. Snow during the morning will become a mix of wintry precipitation during the afternoon. High 19F. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 100%. 5 to 8 inches of snow and ice expected.

Tuesday Night A wintry mix early will taper to a few snow showers late. Low 19F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 70%. Snow and ice accumulations less than one inch.

Wednesday will be calm, with a little freezing rain on the overnight to keep our hand in.

On the one hand, 60F/16C on December 25 in Central Maine is Just Wrong.

On the gripping hand, I was enjoying this shovel-free time.

What's the weather look like at your house?

Today's blog post is brought to you by Rhoderic Land:  "King Kong Tonight."  Here's your link.

Eee, I love that song!

We're in Hot Springs, AR until Tuesday, looking out the window of the RV at steady rain. The bad storms passed over us earlier in the week. We're watching the weather closely; there is supposed to be snow ahead of us at Balmorhea State Park (http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/balmorhea) in Texas. With luck it will be gone before we get there. Balmorhea's gorgeous, and one of these days I'd like to stay there when the weather's warm enough to swim, but not this time! :-)

For anyone who has not heard King Kong Tonight, may I recommend taking the few minutes and listen to it. When you stop laughing, you may even want to listen to it again. And find yourself humming it on occasion, with a smile :-)

There's a touch of pathos there too, which is what makes it memorable for me; you laugh and then it makes you think. I'm always surprised Rhoderick Land isn't more widely played. Though, mildly NSFW, if that's a concern.

Currently 17.8 degrees, tomorrow's maximum 34 degrees. Celsius that is. But then it is summer here so a certain amount of warmth is expected.

Forecast sunny and hot for rest of week.

Coastal Mass. I'm back in summer clothes, sleeping with the windows wide open and only a sheet for cover on the bed!

Monday looks like our day for weather excitement. We are supposed to begin with a wintry mix and change over to snow later in the day for a total of 5 - 8 inches followed by another 1 - 3 overnight. Otherwise the next ten days look relatively good. Luckily, I don't need to travel anywhere and am on vacation until Jan. 4. Lots of time for reading!

Here in the DC area, yesterday was so warm and humid that I regretted roasting a turkey breast for dinner because it made the kitchen so hot. More like some of my childhood Christmases in Houston than like Maryland would be expected to be.

Today cloudy and a little more chilly.

The projected bad weather is all going north of us. We don't expect anything but temps dropping back into far-more-seasonal highs in the 40s. Good thoughts aimed at all expecting snow and ice.

Here in the rectangular bit at the top of TX, we were in the 60's for the week of Christmas, but now at a quarter of Sunday it's 33F and heading for an overnight low of 22F. Winds are from the NNE at 32 mph, gusting to 45. We are supposed to get a "wintry mix" of precip tonight -- I haven't looked outside to see if it's here yet. The low pressure swirly thing that's driving "Winter Storm Goliath" is due east of us, straddling the AZ/NM border at the moment and heading straight for TX. Our "high" tomorrow is forecast to soar all the way up to 27F with snow predicted. In fact, we are under a "blizzard" warning" with accumulations of 3-5 inches Sunday night will be a balmy 18F. Monday will be sunny and warm with a high of 32F, cooling down to a brisk 15F Monday night. Highs/lows predicted for Tues of 36F/11F and Wed of 33F/6F, at which point it will officially be colder than a wedge. Whatever snow accumulation we get Sunday will probably be with us for the rest of the week. Since we are officially "semi-arid" in these parts, the local wet-weather driving skills leave much to be desired, so whenever we get snow or freezing precipitation, it is automatically a Demolition Derby Day. In view of the current weather forecast, I think I'll stay off the streets for the rest of the week. I've got a full pantry, shawls, an electric kettle, lap robes, a cat, knitting to do, TV to watch and here directly I'll go dribble the kitchen faucet. My town is at the same latitude as Casablanca, Morocco (33.5667° N), so needless to say, we do not insulate houses or pipes with the same foresight as you Maine-liners.

Currently it's mid 80s and cloudy in Sarasota Florida... we have had an unseasonably warm winter thus far.

It's been in the low 70s this week, so shorts & t-shirts for walks, with occasional resorting to the a.c. Due to several days of protracted precipitation, we walked at an alternate park yesterday, with concrete paths [& a bevy of extra-slippery boardwalks]. Ze spouse spotted what turned out to be two small snakes, all curled up on the concrete. Closer examination of pictures at home determined they were rattlesnakes. Eep! Still cute little critters, though--at a discreet distance.

Happy New Year!
