WASHINGTON -- A congressman says comedian Bill Maher's comment that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit" is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show.

Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., takes issue with remarks on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, first aired May 13, in which Maher points out the Army missed its recruiting goal by 42 percent in April.

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

Army Reserve Pfc. England was accused of abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

"I think it borders on treason," Bachus said. "In treason, one definition is to undermine the effort or national security of our country."

Now, I wonder if it would "border on treason" if I were to notice that the offended Congresscritter's surname reminds me of the late Jim Bakus, the voice of the dangerously myopic Mr. Magoo...

Lord knows it isn't as if it isn't true, or as if no one has ever expressed similar sentiments . . . the phrase they used to use, back during the period when the military was recovering from the damages of Viet Nam, was "they were taking the ones that missed the cutoff between carrots and people."

Not least of the things for which to blame Bush, Rumsfeld, and the rest of their gang is the waste and systematic destruction they've visited upon the US military, and especially the Army. It took almost two decades to come back from the Viet Nam mess; it's going to take as long or longer to do cleanup on this one, and we'd better hope to goodness we don't actually need an army for anything important in the interim.
