As near as either of us can figure, we moved in together on May 1, 1979, after a whirlwind courtship. (The whirlwind won.) Neither of us expected the relationship to last -- I still have dozens of record albums and thousands of books marked with my name. Steve had asked me to do this before we combined households so that "when we split up" it would be easier to sort out which belonged to who -- and neither of us had been looking for a relationship at all. I had determined early that life was complicated enough without adding in extra people, and Steve was in the midst of a divorce.

And so here we are a quarter century later, slightly bemused by it all, and wouldn't you know I forgot to write my name on the cats.

We watched Big Fish Friday night and I had a very good time with it. Must watch again, at least, and it may be a keeper. Master and Commander was on the playbill last night. I was engrossed and I'm glad we've seen it, but I have no desire to see it again, or to see more.

Up tonight, Cowboy Bebop.

But, first, to work.

You two have been together about as long as we have--and entered into it with about the same attitude!

I did finally winnow out book dupes about six years ago, due to a serious space crunch.

Re tne movies, it's so strange how tastes can paralell and then abruptly diverge. We watched M&C last night...and I woke up today with an intense hunger to see it again. If I earn some TV time next weekend, I'll probably rewatch it.

We did some winnowing when we opened our used bookstore, the SF/F section of which was entirely stocked with our dupes.

For Master and Commander, I think that I suffer from a lack of familiarity with the Aubryverse. I haven't read the O'Brian books, so the movie felt, to me, like I'd been dropped into the middle of an ongoing story, without any notion of who the characters were, or how they were tied to each other. Some of it became obvious as the movie went on, but for a film which was essentially about character (the "plot" of chasing Archeron was pretty thin stuff), it was ... ultimately unsatisfying. I think, had I read at least one of the books and had an idea of who these people where going in, that the film might have resonated more with me. As it was, it was an interesting film and I'm not sorry I saw it.

I wondered about this. The first time I saw it in the big cinema, I thought I could tell which audience members had read the books by the tiny reactions that escaped people at bits that otherwise might have been either completely opaque or even pointless, considering high tightly edited it was. (Second time the audience was quiet, so I couldn't test my theory.)

But I suspect it does make a very big diff.
